I'm a bit closer than that cause I use spinning gear.  Probably about 30 to 40 feet but not any closer.

    I get close to the dock and flip the bait under by hand then back the boat up about 60 yards and reel it in!

    I get in close, 10 to 20 feet to skip.

    Never had a problem.

    Use a spinning rig to avoid backlashes with baitcasters.
