So my drag on my brand new baitcaster wont get tight enough to function properly. What could the problem be? I have a receipt so I will take it back to academy tom. but just wonderin if this is a common fixable problem?

What I learned from my thread I made awhile ago, was that you could have gotton some oil on the drag. Clean the oil off and that might help.

What is the make and model of the reel?

Are you using braided line on your reel?

it is not even tight when I crank it all the way down. The reel is a quantum code

yes it has braid on it. I am taking it back today and we'll see what they say

Yup I have that feeling again. Your using braided line without a backer on the spool arbor aren't you... If so the line is slipping on the spool. The max drag for the code is only about 10# to begin with.

One way to test it is remove the spool from the reel with the line on it, then holding both ends of the spool so it doesn't turn pull the tag end of the line and see if the whole line stack is turning on the spool...

If this isn't the case then someone has removed the handle assembly and restacked the drag spring washers in the wrong orientation...

It is most likely the line slipping on the spool and not a problem with the drag.

Ok so I just messed around with it and it worked. How do I prevent the line from slipping?

It could have bound up on the spools arbor enough to keep it from slipping.....

There are a couple of different ways to stop the line slippage. You can run a couple of layers of mono onto the spool and tie to it, you can add a strip of electricians tape to the spools arbor and then tie to it with the arbor knot.

I put some Vanish fluro 17lb test......I like casting with this better but do get more backlashes than braid.(Im still training my thumb) The drag is working fine now and I will take better preparations next time I use braid.

Of course you get more backlashes, while braided even at high tests is extremely limp all monofilamentous lines are stiff if compared to braided which means they overrun a lot more than braided.
