Purchased a Quantum Tour PT1160 reel. This was purchased to give as a gift. Took the nephew fishing with his new reel and right out of the box this thing squeals when casted. I tried different settings on the brake and the tension knob with no luck. I am hoping maybe some lube (oil/grease) in the right place will help. My only problem is where is the right place? Any help would be appreciated as I am slightly embarrassed giving a gift that doesn't perform up to standards. :-[

Without having the reel in front of me and finding exactly what is causing the squeal, I would recommend these procedures...

Remove the cast control cap and add one drop of quality reel oil to the shim (top pic in the blue circle), and one drop of oil to the spool support bearing there. Now while the reel is open remove the spool and add one drop of oil to the spool support bearing inside of the spool race and frame. While you have the palming side plate off and the spool removed add one drop of oil to the spool support bearing/shim in that side plate (bottom pic in the blue circles).

Yes sir the only reason I mentioned a quality reel oil is because I don't like Quantum' lubricants and don't consider them to be quality (more gimmick).

Also if this doesn't cure the noise, then I would try using an oiled Q-tip and swipe it around the brass brake race in the palming side plate.

Thanks for the timely advice. I just purchased the same reel and I had some squeeling or noise. I lubed two of the locations you mentioned and it solved the problem. I did not know about the third location until I read your post but I'll get some lub on that that now.

No problem, after 25 years of looking at different reels for various problems you get a sense for what goes down on these babies.

None of the MFG's do a very good job of lubricating their reels for shipment to distributors. Whenever I get a new or used reel the very first thing I do is break it down and re-lube it my way.. Glad it helped.

I'll say.  It seems that half the Revo's, Patriarchs or Johnny Morris reels I've purchased over the past 2 years needed lubing of the spool shaft bearing to solve whine on the cast. Brand new BPS Extremes lacking main gear grease that would cause a rough feel when reeling right out of the box.

Either these reels are going down the line too fast or somehow a production engineer figured the company would save 5 cents for every 1000 reels if they'd just use a micro liter less of oil per bearing.   ;D

RM and I have had lots of discussions about the QA of reel manufacturers, found out recently they are only looking at (QA) 1 in 1000 reels trying to keep the production lines running and producing more in a day (paid by the piece)...
