Right now I only have a couple rod and reel setups but have a couple baits that are over the rods reccomended capacity. Was wondering how far over the rating you can go before you risk breaking the rod on a cast. Wanted to throw some jig and pig combos and the heavier lipless cranks like the clackin rap that might be over the 3/4 oz rating, the clackin rap would be 1/8. Would this break the rod or what level do you guys think would ruin the rod?

I never had much luck doing this. I found I either under cast, because when the rod went forward the tip was pointing too far down or this is the one way I have broken a Fenwick I was a full ounce over the rod recomendation and I had a loop that snagged the line during the cast, that was the end of that rod!

1/8 oz over should have no adverse effect on the rod.

A little over the rating shouldn't have much effect. If you're significantly over the maximum, then make sort of a lob cast rather than a hard snap cast.

Where did you get your clackin rap? I want to know so I can show up with my sub walk that never works, and  my x rap shad that swims right past schooling fish without hooking up.

I caught a ton of LMB and :in salt water:'Cocktail Blues using those Sub Walks this year.

I regularly go over with my salt water rods.  Some of the lures weigh a ton and take a real heave to get them out there  The salt water rods have got a lot of backbone to them and I feel comfortable pushing them.

I don't go much over though on my freshwater rods.  Maybe 1/2 oz if I'm careful.  I'll lob it then like the other poster suggested.

I wouldn't go over more than 1/4oz.
