you dont want to use any sinkers on crankbaits, unless they are the stick on kind that you use to make a floater sink to the point where it suspends....but thast off topic

depend on what your targeting. i assume since your posting on bass resource that your targeting bass, and i also assume that theyre for your 13yr old boy since you posted about getting him a rod and some tackle for xmas.

hook sizes, i'd say go w/ a 3/0. it may look big at first, but really its not. i'd be safe to say its the most standard size for bass....they have big mouths!!!

hook design, i'd say you should get an off set EWG worm hook. that may just be a bunch of jumble to you. offset means that right behind the hook eye, there is a little 90° bend. this is used to hold the worm on the hook. EWG stands for extra wide gap. it means that the gap (bend) of the hook is larger than usual and the hook point is in line w/ the eye. makes for easier rigging and more weedlessness and stronger hook sets.

my favorite hook is a Gamakatsu (brand name) 3/0 Offset EWG hook.

for sinkers, if you plan on doing weedless plastic worm rigs (texas rig), use bullet sinkers...shaped like a bullet so they slide thru cover easier. if you plan on doing carolina rigs, use egg sinkers, shaped like an egg. if you plan on doing drop shots, use dropshot sinkers...kinda cylindrical. you dont even have to use a sinker at all...my favorite way to fish is to texas rig a senko on a 3/0 hook w/o a weight.

thank you so much. i think im going to try bass fishing so me and my kid can bond a little.

I use the palomar knot on all of my lures. I will try to find a diagram of it.

Tru-Tungsten are great sinkers. Only downside is the price.

I would use 1/8oz for spinning reels and 1/4oz or 3/8 for casting reels.

For most soft plastics, I recommend 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks. I fish Gamakatsu and XPoint, Owner is an other high quality hook. Do NOT skimp on hooks or line, save money somewhere else. These are the two most important parts of your fishing tackle package.

I agree, good line will not nest up break, and make your fishing fun not a struggle

all of these responses are great and very good points have been made.

palomar knots are good for hooks and shorter lures, but i find that since you have to loop the line around the bait, if its a long bait then that can use alot of line, specially if you re-tie alot. so my #1 top preffered knot would be the trilene knot.
