I seem to have a bunch of Arbogast Hula Poppers, Heddon Torpedos, and Smithwick Devil's Horses. But I hardly ever fish them. I was going through my tackle and wondering why I even have them. I bought them years ago and can't remember the last time I tried one.

Does anyone fish these lures? Do they produce?

Edit: And I have a couple of Arbogast Sputterbuzzes, too.

Oh yeah, they still produce which only demonstrates that bass nowdays can be as stupid as they were two and a half decades ago when I began fishing for bass and caught them with those.

The only thing I hate about them Hula Poppers, Spputerbugs and buzz 'are those living rubber skirts, once they dry out and become brittle you just can 't find replacements.  >

I've got a few old Hula Poppers with skirts that are getting a little crisp. There is no saving those. But what do you do to preserve the skirts if they are still in good shape? Nothing?

I'm going to have to come up with something creative for a couple of my hulas that have bad skirts. They are just pressed onto a peg on the rear of the lure. Maybe we can make a fortune by inventing some soft plastic frog legs to stick on that peg.

LOL, we busted out the Hula Poppers this year with great results. Haven't fished them in years, but we figured what the hey.... I changed the hooks out with Gammy's and they are evil. Throw it!  

I'll have to give them a try.  I've had some of them for 10+ years and they are just dead weight in my tackle bags.  I'm going to have to put them to use.  

 The only one I've fished is the Devil's Horse and it is a GREAT topwater bait . Have several colors and sizes.

Just short jerks to make the bait pop.  Then pause.  Then jerk again.  Really simple to work and catches loads of fish.  Vary the length of the jerk to make the pop more or less aggressive depending upon the mood of the fish that day.

As with most topwater lures my fav color is black.

He ain't lyin'!  I could hear that stupid 'PLOP.....PLOP" from the other side of the lake!  The pictures they showed us on the bank weren't so stupid though

I prefer the dying flutter over the devil's horse, Heddon's version, better hooks, sturdier bait, etc.  I have been giving my lake a break from these, we were deadly with them in years past.  It seems on our lake, the fish become accustomed to baits that make a very specific noise, over time.  The flutter will be back in the line up this yr.  Stay tuned

A question about Academy my man. I go to MacAllen 3-4 times a year, there are two Academy stores I visit, one is on McCall street and the other one is on Ware street ( actually I don 't think that store us in MacAllen but in Mission, oh well, MacAllen, Mission, Pharr are in practical terms the same city now ) and both stores stock different things, found GYCB Flappin Hogs at the store on McCall but not at the store on Ware, saw a Zillion at McCall but not on Ware and so on. Does Academy stock certain items in a particular store or regional basis ? because you mention you have a bunch of replacement skirts for the Arbogast skirted baits and I swear I haven 't seen them in either store in at least 6-7 years I 've shopped there.

Yea they do; our buyer is from San Antonio and while he maybe a fine outstanding man he has no clue what sales in Southwest Louisiana. Certain items we can't get no matter what case in point Faulk Duck Calls where are the #1 call along the entire Gulf Coast and are manufactured right here in Lake Charles.

Some of the manufactories are allowed to stock their entire inventory one of which is H & H tackle who has an entire line of rubber skirts among other things. The next time you need certain items you can call Academy, have them check if other stores have that item, and then tell them to do a store transfer which doesn't cost anything.

The torpedos are awsome in this part of the country. Thats the first bait I gained any real confidence in, and I stil use it all the time.

Nothing says "bass plug" like a big, fat hula popper. It's my go to top water for small pockets or anytime I want a slow retrieve.

I'm not a big fan of Hula Poppers.  I've caught fish on them, but much prefer a more subtle popper.  It's tough to get a spitting action with the Hula Poppers - a little twitch and you wake up the whole neighborhood  ;D
