I got a bunch of jigs for Christmas and was wondering how far should I trim the brush guard on each one?

If you gotta trim, I usually trim them even with the hook bend.  Or, you can take your thumb and push down on the guard in the middle, splitting it in half.  That works pretty good without the cutting.

How I trim mine depends on where I am fishing. I normally trim the lenght by pressing the weed guard until it comes in contact with the hook point. Then trim the lenght on the guard so the guard is about 1/8  inch longer than the contact point on the hook point. Hope this makes sense.

I trim the thickness of the weed guard by removing strands if fishing fairly open water such as bluffs of long points. If flipping heavy cover such as laydowns or brush piles I down not normally thin the guard. Hope this helps........................Al

I don't trim the length of the brush guard, I thin the brush guard out if anything.The longer the brush guard length, the easier it is to come through thick weeds, once you shorten it, the point will easily hang up.The new jig designs are extremely good, no hook sharpening, or thinning of the weed guard required right out of the pack, tie them on , impale a trailer on the jig and fish. ;DIvan

Castaway is probably correct. I make my own jigs using widegap hooks and the weed guards are to long. The jigs you purchase may be ok as sold.

As far as length goes I trim mine pretty short because I would rather lose ten jigs than one fish. I make my own so this is a big problem for me.

The jigs that I got are Tru-Tungsten jigs, Booyah, and Eakins.

I trim mine to where the length extends no more than an 1/8 inch above the hook point.  I thin them too by trimming the fibers furthest from the hook the shortest.  As I move to the middle of the group of strands and then to the fibers closest to the hook I leave the strands longer.
