is there anything decent with a BPS name on it?

Recommended Posts

I baught two extremes last month, basically on the reviews I read here, as well as other places. they were my back ups when I couldn't get to the accurist sale in time. after only a month, and not too much use or abuse, I'm dissatisfied with both of them. the 6.4 that I got has a bad grinding/ vibration, I think its the bearings. the 7.1 seems to have a problem with the worm gear as the levelwind keeps snagging/stopping. its very frustrating to know that two brand new reels are crapping out on me. I guess its back to BPS I go to return them, which is frustrating because I live about an hour and a half from the nearest one, so I'll have burned some serious gas because they sell cheap products. I guess I'll be getting a few more revos instead.

I baught a BPS frog a year ago and it wouldn't float, the stick-o's seem extremely rigid and have virtually no action. I think I'll shy away form anything that is BPS brand from now on. may jsut give up on shopping there all together. >;)

I think it's the product not being consistant in quality. For example, I have an older BPS extrem bc'r, that works very well as does my Son, cept he has the Fritts model. I also have a BPS finesse rod, even though I broke it..I'm returning it to get a replacement.

I think it depends on who they get parts from and who assembles the products that make them hit or miss. just my 3 pesos.

BTW, if I could afford better gear, I'd probably buy it over bps.

can't vouch for any of their reels, but i have a BPS microlite rod (md.lite act.) that is untouchable in my eyes.  I absolutely love it, and have for a while........but their rod making abilities, and their intricate gear and reel making abilities may have some major diff's???????????

Take both reels back to BPS, tell them you problem and they will replace them. As Burley said the BPS 100MPH raingear is awesome! I also like their XPS fluorocarbon. Other than that I cannot think of anything good about BPS.

The extreme's are ok, but they are definitely a 'bargain' reel.  The Prolite finesse, Pro Qualifier, or Rick Clunn's model are the reels to get;  I read nothing but positive reviews about them.

I've got 3 Extreme reels.  1 is brand new, so can't say what will happen there, but I've fished the heck out of the other two and have not had a single issue with either one.  I also have several of the Rick Clunn model reels, all but 1 of which have performed flawlessly.  My experience with BPS reels has been, if they work right from the git go, they are great reels, if there any issues early on, take/send it back and exchange it.

I have two Extremes 5.4:1 on crankbait duty. One is 2, the other is 3 seasons old. I oiled them the day i bought them and maintain them regularly. They performed flawlessly so far.

I have 4 of the latest JM signature reels and they haven't let me down.

I've also used and or sold many of the extremes and have not had a personal problem with the reels nor heard any complaints from my customers on the reels I sold them.

One thing I have noticed on brand new Extreme reels, it's a good idea when taking it out of the box to open the small main gear access door on the front reel bottom and shoot some extra grease onto the main gear.  They seem to scrimp a little on lube at the factory.

I've never owned a BPS reel, but I've owned several of their rods. I've bought three Extremes and two JM Signature Series rods in the past couple years, and wouldn't hesitate to buy more if I had the need.

BPS rods are decent deals. I am not a real fan of the extreme line of rods, had them break on me.  I have had serious issues with the BPS reels and will never buy another. I had two Rick Clunn models which were junk. Same problem- could not stand up to the use of braided lines.

I own 2 Pro qualifiers, 1 tourney special, and have used my friends Extreme's. These have been abused and used extensivly and I have never been let down. I will agree with the earlier post tho that PQ's and up are the way to go. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. Catch the PQ's on sale for $80 and they can't be beat.

I have last years pro qualilfier baitcaster in 5.4:1 cranking edition. I have only used it maybe 10 times, but it casts very well and is extremely smooth. Well worth the 49.00 I paid for it. Now, if I could only catch a fish with it.

I have several rods and reels and only one reel has had aproblem which BPS fixed at once. I am very satisfied with their tackle in general. The Sticko's work just fine although I still prefet the Yamamoto's.

the reel with the levelwind problem probably has debris stuck on the gear.this can happen to any reel.bps rods from the bionic blade up are fantastic.many people swear by their xps flourocarbon line and their excel mono.the johnny morris reels are some of the best made.imho johnny morris rods are the best.

I picked up one of the PQ's a few weeks back (got it for like 65 bucks) and it's been great so far.  Really smooth reel, especially for the money spent.  I think I actually use it more than my revo.  I would buy another one in a second if I had the need for it.

I have the following:

XPS fluoro - has worked great

Bionic Blade rod - excellent rod but very heavy so I'd give it an overall "good

Extreme baitcaster - just before they switched to the green model. Solid with no problems. Outstanding for the money.

BPS Tournament extreme baitcaster - the one that was on sale at the Fling for $39. Very smooth but not a set it and forget it baitcaster; you have to have an advanced thumb for this baitcaster. Not for the beginner.

All in all I have had 0 problems and they've all performed very well. Are the baitcasters as good as the Revos I have? No. But they were less than half price and they are 75-80% as good.

I love their XPS rattle shads, they are the best lipless cranks ever. I also have one of their cheaper graphite spinnings rods and it is a wonderful rod, one of my favorites.

I have bought four reels from them, all spinning. Two of them broke rather quickly and the other two are still going strong. The funny thing is, the two ones that are still working great were their cheapest spinning reels, the megacasts.

I think only thing I have gotten at Bass Pro Shops is the glass beads for c-riggin.  For some reason I am hesitant to pull the trigger on anything else because I don't like to use their stuff or Cabela's stuff because I believe their is something better.
