Best Casting Affordable Baitcaster

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get another baitcaster. What reel seems to have the best breaking system, ie controlling backlashes, for under $150? A higher capacity reel would be best, at least 150 yards of 12 pound line, but it doesn't for sure have to be.

By far I think the best reel that can be had for that price is the new shimano curados. You can get them on ebay for about $150 even. I picked two up on ebay for 149.97 with free shipping. They're awesome reels and they meet your parameters. Check 'em out if you haven't already.  ;)

If you can't find a Curado for $150, the new Citicas are very nice also.

Definitely do this because it meets your criteria!  With their 15% off that makes the curado $152.15 with free shipping. Not only that, they're very reputable. I hope they have it in stock for you.

I see the Johnny Morris Signature Series baitcasters are on sale for $129.99. Are they better than the curados or not as good? Verdict on them?

Safe to say I will go with the Shimano. How well does the VBS perform

in minimizing backlashes?

They perform superbly. Pardon the expression, but once you set it, just forget it. Either 3 brakes on and 3 off or 2 brakes on and 4 off. Most beginners to these brakes will love the former but will most likely gravitate to the latter shortly afterward. It seems to be a natural progression.

IMHO, the VBS systemn is very forgiving. Matter of fact, every bird's nest is 100% angler induced.  ;D ;)

These two configurations will cover most scenarios you will face. I guarantee it. ;)

+1 on the Curado. Or a Citica if you can't find a Curado in the price range. I own both and love them.  ;)

The Curado is an outstanding reel.  Casts light and heavy lures, retrieve is nice and smooth and it is very dependable.

Later, ;)

agree with islandbass...start out at setting the vbs at 3 brakes on get used to it and your thumb control then set um to 2 and more then likely itll stay that way from then on out just use the spool control knob to balance out the difference betwen lure changes.but seriously also check the citica for 50 bucks less its got a few less bearings but its built on the same curado frame and everything...try to find another reel built in japan for $120....wont happen.but good luck adios
