What are some things to consider to increase casting distance using 10lb line when casting lighter lures/jigs/worms.  I can't decrease the line weight due to snags/pads etc.  Spinning gear only.  Should I increase the spool size? Lighter weight rod? Longer rod?  

Any advice welcomed.

2500 series reel: Shimano Symetre or Stradic

Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test)

KVD Line & Lure Conditioner

It is important to have a "full" spool of line. That means

filling the spool to within 1/8" of the lip. When you have

gone through some line, replace 80 yards or so, you don't

need to replace all of the line.

With this set up you should be able to cast a 5" Senko

at least 30 yards.

Depends on how light - you can only cast some things so far because of their air resistance.

A longer and lighter action rod will help you the most.  A full spool like RW mentioned is key as well, but if it's a baitcaster you'll need to do some tweaking as it will be a bit more prone to overrides (not huge, but some).

One more little thing..

Make sure you don't have a large coil (use a relaxed line or treat KVD the line) of line coming off the reel into the first butt guide (guide closest to reel), this will also cut casting distance with spinning gear..

I am using smaller spool reels 35 and 40.

Can't go down to 6lb line. I would never get fish out of the dense pads.

I know that braided line is smaller diameter than comparable mono, but I did not have good luck with the braid and don't want to go there.

I do like that YoZuri line.  Need to find some of the soft Hybrid.

RW's suggestion might actually be what you're looking for. Although the line he recommends is rated at 6# test, you can see that it's breaking strength is nearly 12#. Its thin diameter will probably give you your desired longer casts. Or, perhaps the 8 or 10# version of the same line might work?

I hear you on wanting to try the soft Hybrid. I would like to try it too, but it can't be found locally for me.

Braid is the answer. The loops coming off the spool are smaller than any mono which allows for less friction getting thru the first rod guide. 20# braid has a mono diameter equivelent of 6#. Fill the spool to within 1/8" of the lip. A smaller diameter braid will cast even farther. The KVD spray will add even more distance.

Use the 6# yo zuri, it casts great and sometime when I get stuck on a log it is a PITA to break because it just doesn't want to.
