Shimano Cumara ...

Recommended Posts

My 6'8 cumara snapped today. This totally sucks. I thought my head was going to blow off i was so mad. This is the second rod that breaks on me in 3 outings. The other was a crucial where the guide ripped off.  I think i got a curse against me or something...

Good luck with the shimano cumara. You may have a long waiting time on getting the same model that you sent in.

what happened to the over-the-counter warranty?

The over the counter warranty is good - as long as the dealer has the same model in stock.  Sometimes the exact model is out of stock, but if you have a good relationship with your tackle shop, they may exchange for another model in stock.  Otherwise, you'll just have to wait for them to restock.  I think it's still the best warranty out there.

Contact the dealer where you bought the rod and see if they have one in stock to replace yours. If not then you will need to send the rod to us for warranty replacement, We will allow you to cut the rod in half to avoid oversized shipping charges.

I watched Hoist-n-Hawgs snap 2 of those in a tourney with me last year. One on a cast (1/4 oz flipping tube) the other on a hookset.

And for the over-the-counter warranty. It's BS, the Bass Pro in Foxboro won't honor it and tell you to send it to Shimano because it will take less time. >:)

That said...I love both of my 7'2" medium extra fast spinning Cumara's. ;D

The high modulous graphite can be brittle. Most breaks we have seen have been from either shipping related damage or damage to the rod (banged on the deck or dinged somehow).

Our rods use a flex coating over the blank which will hide dings in the graphite. The graphite on the innerwalls can fracture if a rod is smacked into something. The flex coat will move back into the correct shape and not appear to be damaged. The rod will then fail at a later time. A truly bad blank (not damaged in shipping) will fail when it is first loaded, so usually the first trip it is used. A break 6 months down the line is usually from damage or being overloaded or high sticking/bouncing fish.

If a rod breaks clean then that is a direct result of damage to the rod resuting in failure. If the rod end is flared like a funnel and/or broke into multiple pieces, then that broke do to overloading or just a bad blank. A lot of rods that come through here are broken clean like they were cut with a knife.

Rod lockers tend to do a lot of damage too. I strongly suggest using rod socks on any high modulous rods. They do help protect the blank from damage.

I have witnessed the rod testing machine shatter rods at the Loomis factory. You would be amazed how much pressure it really takes to break a rod. It took 21+ pounds to break a 6' UL (1-4 pound line) GLX rod. This is when the rod is lifted stright up so the rod is in a candy cane shape. I'm know heavier rods take less pressure  because they bend less than a noodly UL trout rod.

Went back to cabelas today and they gave me store credit for the rod because they did not have it in stock.  The lady at customer service said that a bunch of the manufactures (kistler, carrot stix, st. croix, and a few others) are no longer doing the over the counter warranty with cabelas.  All customers have to deal with the manufacturer for replacing broken rods.

Are the Cumara rods too brittle and aren't living up to its value?  You can't go wrong with the warranty.

Between me and my fishing buddies, we own all Crucial and Cumara rods.  Just about every single one of our Cumara rods have been damaged and shipped in for a new replacement.

Our Crucial rods holds up greatnever had any problems with them.

But ever since the Cumara rods came outwe've broken a bunch of them.  Even with the great warrantyit's still a pain when one after another breaks.

As a big Shimano fanI love the Cumara, but the continuous breakage of these rods are starting to make me think twice about them.
