best knot to use for flurocarbon leader???

Recommended Posts

I just picked up some 12# Triple Fish florucarbon line and will use it primarily as a leader with 20/6 Power Pro on MH spinning gear for soft plastics. I plan to use a double uni to join the lines, and have always used a palomar for the hook with mono leaders. Is the palomar ok for fluro or should I use another knot?

The Palomar is OK for fluorocarbon IF it is tied correctly. I use the uni-uni knot connection for the leader and the uni-knot for the hook.

Crazy Alberto

Is he related to Dirty Sanchez? ;D

Uni to Uni works great, saltwater guys use the no-name on leader to bimini twist on braid end.

For tying to terminal tackle I like Trilene knot and palomar depending on application.

For the leader, I think the Uni to Uni is a stronger knot and smaller through the guides than the Albright, but others think the Albright is smaller. My recommendation is to try them both and determine what works best for you over time.

A Uni to Uni connection is very strong, but loses strength after just a few fish, so retie after a couple.  If the braid is much smaller than the leader, then use a Spider Hitch knot to double the braid, and give the leader more to "bite" into.  The Improved Allbright doesn't seem to suffer this malady.  I don't see any difference in the thickness of the knots, but the Uni connection is longer.  As far as casting, I can't tell if one is better through the guides.

After catching 3 bass the fluro leader broke about 1/8" below the Uni to Uni knot. I have always heard flurocarbon line is brittle and I guess this proves it.

I didn't have any line for a new leader with me so I just tied the braid directly on to the hook and caught several more fish with no problem. Maybe I'll just forget about using a leader.

uni - uni. 100% knot strength. can't go wrong man. just make sure that you wet the line BEFORE you tighten it up all the way.
