Good Frogging Rod Under $75?

Recommended Posts

I recently decided that I would like to try a frog specific set-up. However, I can't really afford to fork out much more than $75 for the rod. I would prefer to pay around $50. You guys have any recommendations of a decent MH/H rod for the prices listed above?

Additional info -

I have a quantum classic 1420 mgc baitcaster as my reel - 5.1-1 ratio.

I am also looking at buying some Fireline in the #10 diameter size.

Switch the 5:1:1 reel out for one with a faster retrieve if you can. You want a high speed reel to catch up to the fish that make a dive for thick weeds or pads and keep them out of there. A 7:1:1 would be best, but a 6:4:1 would work OK.

x2 on the gear ratio...

Another couple of options for a rod might be the all star classics, or the american rodsmiths apex titanium, both 50 bucks at academy. I know the all star is decent, I'm picking up one of the american rodsmith's rods next week.

your reel is fine, however, #10 fireline is not sufficient for frogging.  You'll have horrendous digging into your spool, not to mention that you'll be breaking line all the time.

reel is fine but id consider going to a 6.4 or higher to avoid a lunker peeling line and going into a messy brush pile...AVOID fireline at all costs...and as for a rod check out a kistler carbon steel ($99) or a falcon original ($85)

+1

On another note, I liked fireline.... until I fished about 7 hours in steady rain and it bled all over my stx.

Highly suggest a round braid (not sure if you meant fireline braid or the regular, fused-line fireline) for frogging, especially on a casting setup.

Agreed on the Clarus, although I generally frog on a 6'6" MH Convergence, and it gets the job done...I do wish it had a little more power, though.

I think they make the Clarus in 7' H.

Also, I use 30lb P-Line Spectrex for frogging.  Never had a problem.

Sensitivity is not really needed for this...

I'd say a BPS Extreme 7', MH or H will do fine.  And you can frequently get them on sale for $70.

I also agree on the reel and braid comments.  As fast a reel as you can get, and at least 50lb braid

Thanks for the comments guys.  I'm going to hopefully pick up my rod today.  Probably going to get the Clarus in a 7' MH or H which ever one the store I go to has in stock.

I picked up a few frogs this weekend, one to note was the Spro Bronzeye in "The Killer" coloring, which is extremely successful around here right now.  Also very hard to come by.  I also picked up 12lb diameter/50lb test fireline.  It says that it is the round braid.  It's hard to choose a braided line since everyone has their own favorites ;).  This is the brand

.  I'll give it a try and see how it goes.  I'm hoping well because braided line is a bit expensive.

In response to the faster gear ratio.  I happen to have a 7.1:1 Daiwa Strikeforce that needs new line.  I can switch that one over and use it as well.  Move the 5.1:1 over to my medium pole.
