taking a newbie with me, need a line suggestion

Featured Replies

I am taking one of my fellow sergeants from my platoon on a trip to Kentucky Lake this Friday.  I am going to lend him my 6'6" MH lightning rod/shimano symetre combo.  I plan on getting him on a frog/fluke bite in some heavy grass and wanted to know what lb. test braid to go with on the spinning set up.  I don't ever use braid on my spinning reels so it's new to me, but I want him to have it for the heavy weeds and I don't think the 50lb powerpro I use on my frog setup will do so well on the spinning reel.  I was thinking maybe 12-14lb Powerpro braid...wudda you guys think?  Thanks for any suggestions!

i use braid for everything

i even use braid with my spinning rod

50lb power pro is like 12 lb mono

you wont get a whole lot on the reel but it would work

if u are going to go out and buy a new spool of power pro just for him and the spinning rod i would opt for some 30lb at least which is like 6lb mono diameter I'm pretty sure the lower u go with braid the thinner it gets so 12lb braid is like 4lb or 2lb mono i think he will be doing alot of retying and if by chance he hooks a good fish I'm sure u want him to land it so that is why I'm saying get 30

you are taking a newbie I'm sure u want to put him on fish and have him catching not breaking off or losing fish

I'm sure others will give you advice

Try teaching the newbie how to fish. I cant suggest anything without getting reamed so have fun.

sweet daddy,

It's about time to pack your bags, I suspect you will be gone

shortly.

Whatever you have spooled up will probably be fine for

a day or two. You already know this isn't the best rig for

fishing weeds, but if you want to change out the line, 20/6

or 30/8 will work.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Yeah I know it ain't the best rig for the thick stuff RW, but ya' know how it goes...Dude can't cast a baitcaster and I'm not gonna spool 50# on my rig that usually handles light jigs, so I kinda' had to make due with what I had that he is able to use.  I'll post pics of our trip tomorrow.  Well, I'm out the door to the lake!!!
