Spinning reel question

Featured Replies

I'm looking at three different reels in the 50-60 dollar range.  The BPS Extreme, the Daiwa XiA, and the Shimano Sedona.  Can anyone give me a personal insight on any of these reels?

Also curious as to your favorite line for spinning.

I'm a big fan of the Daiwa Exceler (and Tierra). I believe Cabela's Tournament ZX by Daiwa is similar. Sometimes they are on sale in the $50 - $60 range.  The Daiwa's have excellent line management relative to my Shimano Stradic FH.

Although I have not used the Daiwa XiA, my bias ;) would push me in that direction.

I like Gamma CoPoly.  Even on sale it's expensive, though :)  It has very low memory and is strong.  Because I lose a lot of baits, it pay's for itself by allow me to save a couple that I would have otherwise lost.  Plus, I have less tangles...  On spinning gear I use #6 and #10.

I don't own any of the models mentioned, but have you considered the Pflueger President in the same price range? Smooth reeling and decent drag. I just picked one up for $55.

I think the President is a safe bet. Just read reviews at BPS. Most people have good luck with them.

Smooth, well built reel, and cheap. The trade off is they are heavy, but any reel in that price range will be.

I believe the sedona is the best reel in that price range not including sales on more expensive reels.  For that price range you can't beat what the sedona offers.  I have 2 sedona reels, a 1000 and a 2500 and I've had them for about 6 months and still as smooth as when I bought them.

Check out bass pro the PQ on sale for 38 bucks close out sale. New model this year. :)

quantum incyte $54.

yo zuri ultrasoft 8lb.

cant go wrong.

The President looks like a good choice in your price range, but check your local sporting goods stores for deals on older Shimano models as well. My local Sports Authority still has several Sahara FB and Symetre FI models in stock, and the Symetres are often marked down to $59.

These aren't the smoothest reel made but the mag spool design has a very noticeable effect on casting distance, and line management.

This is a GREAT buy.

The upper end reels are probably just smoother, and still have the same design.

My brother has used the extreme for a couple years now with good success.

EDIT:The Extreme spinning reel is the one I was referring to as not being all that smooth but performs well.

I really appreciate all this info, guys.

Everyone has their own personal preference as to what brand or manufacturer they prefer. For the most part all manufacturers within a specific price range are going to be somewhat comparable. IMO it makes more sense to take the rod you are going to use with this reel and go to your local tackle store to see which reel balances best and which reel you prefer. I'd give you my personal preference but that would be my opinion, and opinions are like human anatomy parts. Everyone has one. LOL

I've read reviews on some of these reels and people have had real problems with some of them.  If I got confirmation of the same problems with people here, I could scratch that of my list.

the President is beginning to look like a winner.

Dicks had few symetres for sale, didn't pay attention to the price but can't be more than what stasher said.
