Got a question about jigs??

Featured Replies

I bought a bunch of jigs and the weedless part sticks out past the hook point a quarter of an inch maybe less. Will this effect my hook set any? Do you trim it down or leave it like that?

Thanks

FisherDave

that shouldn't be to bad I would recomennd cutting some off at the bottom if it seems like there is a lot.  A good idea came up in the newest bassmaster.  Cut all the fibers off and install a screw lock at the tie end of the bait.  screw your trailer on to it and then stick your hok through and stick the tip back into the bait like you are texas rigging it.  I can't wait to try it

Hey fisherdave,

Good purchase, jigs are great baits.  While I have never trimed the length of my jig weed guards, I do on occassion thin the thickness of the guard by trimming some of the bristles back to the jig head.  I only do this if I feel the guard is too rigid and may hamper a good hook set.

the guard doesnt affect the hook set but for smaller lighter jigs that are used for shallow points and that i trim the guard but for larger heavier jigs used for weeds i leave the guard along   jig fishing is alot of fun

On my Jigs that I plan to fish rocky/muddy areas, or small stick piles I'll trim the weedguard to where its barely above the hook point like brians_screename said. And if I think its too thick I'll cut 3-4 strands of the guard off.

Although on my Jigs that I plan to fish in weedy conditions or flipped into heavy stickpiles/lillypads and weeds, I will usually leave the guard alone.

I trim mine llike Brian said. Then I take my thumb and push the fibers forward towards the hook eye. This fans out the fibers. It seems to help keep the jig from getting hung up as much on those ocaasional times it may land on its side.
