What rods to use

Recommended Posts

Guys, this is probably a stupid question, but its something that confuses me. Could you guys tell me what type of rod works best for certain types of fishing. For example, use a medium action rod for shaky heads, use meadium-heavy rods for flippin, etc.

I tried to find an article on this, so if i overlooked it, feel free to post a link.

As always, thanks for the help!

I've asked the same question a lot for certain types of fishing. I can shed a little light on the question. For treble hook lures, you want a slow action. M to MH. I like a 7' for cranks. For lures such as spinnerbaits you want a Fast tip. I like a MH 6'10". I think the rod length depends on personal feel as well as what kind of waters you are fishing. Longer rods are obviously going to allow you to cast farther but less accurate, while shorter rods will lack in distance but make up for it in accuracy. Maybe someone else can shed some light on other methods and rod choices. I'm interested to see what they have to say.

Every angler has a different choice in rod selection for each type of bait.  If you go to the St. Croix web site and look at the legend tournament rods they have labeled them.  I fish all St. Croix rods and I don't follow there suggestions to the letter.  If you have a specific technique you want a rod for I can give you my choice.  I can suggest what I feel are the pros and cons with each rod and technique.

Maybe this will help:

Specifically:

Technique specific rods are for "enthusiasts".

Almost all your fishing can be done with just

one rod. Beyond that, you only "need" three rods:

Spinning: 6 1/2' or 7', M or MH, Fast Action

(soft plastics and light lures)

Baitcasting: MH or H, Fast Action

(jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and all single hooks)

Baitcasting: MH, Moderate Action

(all treble hook lures)

8-)

thanks for the helps guys. Up until last year I only used a spinning setup. Now I have learned to throw a baitcaster and I was just confused about when to use what setup. Thanks for all the answers, they were really helpful.

this is how i use different actions and powers.

mod fast - crankbaits

fast - good all around action. spinnerbaits, jigs, plastics, swimbaits, frogs, jerks, tubes, grubs

extra fast - bottom baits (jigs, t-rigs), shakey jigs, drop shot

med light - small baits in sparse cover

med - small plastics, small jigs and t-rigs, cranks

med heavy - t-rigs, jigs, most spinnerbaits, larger cranks. any bait in moderate cover

heavy - frog, heavy jigs, 1oz swimbaits. any bait in heavy cover

shorter rods give you more accuracy and less casting distance and vice versa. most of my rods are between 6'6" and 7"

some people wont agree with my post. some use extra fast for frogs and jerkbaits. some dont use extra fast for anything...
