So, I have looking into the Powell and Lamiglas rods for a crankbait setup.  Anyone use glass rods?  Which rod and would you recommend?  I read through most of the reviews on Tackle Tour but wanted to get some non-technical feedback.  Thanks.

the non-orange version of the lami SR705R is the XCF705R and i love those rods but they are definitely not for everyone. they feel like a wet noodle and are not particularly sensitive but, man, i land more fish on the lamis than all my other crankin' rods combined. fish NEVER come unbuttoned on them.

my other favorites are the dobyns glass CBs http://www.tackletour.com/reviewdobyns704cbglass.html. i've had two powell glass CBs but, for some reason, i liked the graphite powell CBs more.

i think you're on the right track with glass CB rods...i bought a g.loomis CBR845 last year and i loved it at first but then noticed that my hookup ratio was lower...my theory is that it is TOO sensitive for a CB rod.

I build my custom crankin' rods with Lamiglass originals. You can get either a 1/4-3/4 ounce rod or the big brother for heavier lures. however, that 1/4-3/4 ounce rod is awesome.

I should add though, that it has trouble ripping XR75s free. I wouldn't use it for anything larger than that, or for really deep diving cranks.

Since the Lamiglas Skeet Reese rod is no longer being produced, is the new line the Ceritified Pro?  I believe the Certified Pro blanks are used on the Excel line.  Is this correct?

lamiglas has said that they are still making the SR705R, just without skeet's name on it.

regarding the XCF705R, it actually preceeded the SR705R. the blank are the same...the only difference is the paint. originally, the SR rods had a non-tapered handle but they later changed that to match the XCF.

You might want to check into that NorCal. I believe it's the XCF705R  blank that's used for the Excel.

I spoke to Brian at Lamiglas.  The former Skeet Reese signature glass rod is still in production less the Skeet Reese name.  Brian shared the Excel blank is the base blank for the Certified Pro or XCF705. The American Tackle guides are made to Lamiglas specs and are still high quality.  Lamiglas was determined to hit an affordable price point without compromising quality.  One more option to look at.

  Answer: Yes and no.  I did but traded them to a buddy.  The Competitor series is a decent rod at the right price.  Do NOT get the first issue with the cross check finish.  It looked neat but chipped easily.  A material flaw.  The second issue has the clean brown finish like the Certified Pro glass rods. I paid 62 bucks new for mine.  It is a composite blank.  It's parabolic but not as slow as glass.  I used it for square bills because it was short enough for accuracy and soft enough ( still good back bone ) to keep hooks from tearing out.  It could easily double as a spinnerbait rod. If you can get one for 50 to 55 bucks you would not be dissapointed.  Happy shopping
