I was going to get a heavy for flipping and swimbaits but the more I look at was I am going to fish I think I might get the extra heavy what do you guys think

get the heavy , you got to remember that you don't want the rod too stiff (would be good for flipping , not good for casting unless you throw swimbaits heavy enough to let the rod load up to cast decently )

i thought you said for flipping and for swimbaits . do youcast the jigs or flip them ?? if i was just flipping them and using it to punch mats , i would get the XH . if i was using it to cast jigs and to flip plastics , i would get a heavy powered rod . i like a stiffer rod(extra heavy) when short flipping ( punching mats and soft plastics ) and a slightly less stiffer rod so i can get more on the cast and be able to fight the fish better when the fish is a ways away from me ( if you cast out the jig a ways). so that's my opinion , and it works for me

How heavy a swim-bait are you throwing? What % of the time will the rod be used for swim-baits? You can use the same rod for both but it will be a compromise one direction or the other. I know from another post pgersumky has a dual purpose rod he likes.

I will be throwing 1.5 -2 oz swimbaits and 1-1.5 oz soft plastics

XH/moderate.

That swimbait size should be fish-able on a flipping rod. An  XH/MF will give you some extra backbone for the mat and enough tip to cast the swimbaits.  An 8'  MHX XH/MF graphite swimbait blank rated for 1-4oz lures could be used to build you something nice for $150 +/-. as stated previously, it sounds like you need two rods to do both well. but if I could only get one, based on what i've read here i would get an 8 foot, heavy, with a fast action. not extra fast, and not moderate. of course everybody's different, but I just do not like flipping or pitching with a moderate action rod. Some very good rod builders make them with a moderate action though. From the looks of the picture you posted you will be doing more punching mats than casting swimbaits though. the 8'HF will work for all but the nastiest stuff

Well not sure either a custom one from Delaware valley tackle or from A brand you can suggest i'm open to everything in the price range of 100-175 thanks

If you can get a custom rod for 175.00..get it. Usually the just the blank will run 150.00 or so.

Jfyi..Shimano rods are usually under rated, i.e. my Calcutta and Clarus will throw more weight than they are rated for, case in point, the calcutta is rated for 1oz max, yet easily throws 2oz baits.

Can't speak to other brands re: rod ratings.

I fish stuff similar to that, AND THICKER. I use a Dobyns 805 . It's an 8ft MEAT STICK. It isn't ideal for swimbaits, but it is the best tool for flipping that stuff. You could get by tossing swimbaits on it, but it's definitely more for fishing that stuff.

I like a rod that loads up a bit more for swimbaits, and I like a STIFF rod for flipping jigs. Are you going to be doing one more then another? Or 50/50?

I like to flip jigs more but have really been throwing swimbaits lately so probably 60% jig And 40% swimbait
