I read, last year, of a trick to remove backlash from a bait caster. It was using the thumb nail somehow.

Anybody know this trick?

The best way to fix it is to not let it happen. When it does though, tighten down the drag, put your thumb on the spool while applying pressure with the thumb. Turn the handle. Make a few turns then pull out the line, works like 95% of the time.

To get the best results from this technique, don't pull the line too tight initially, and really mash down on the spool as you reel.

I pull out some line.  As much line as I can possibly throw out with one cast, then about 10 yards more.  Then I use a piece of black electrical tape and tape down the line on my reel at that point.  That will prevent backlashes from going past that taped point.  Now it wont stop backlashes, but it will make it easier to pull and wont go down to deep.  After a while you get better but it still happens to us all once and a while.
