Recommended Posts

Anyone in here have any comments on the Code?

I recently purchased one and have not tried it yet but the reviews were pretty good and I am looking forward to trying it out.

Really? I read 44 reviews on it and 98% of the reviews were 4 out 5 stars and a lot of good comments so what did you not like about it?

I have three of them as back-ups for new 200e7s. At less than $100, it's a good reel if you clean the factory lubes out and replace it with top end aftermarket synthetic lubes. HOWEVER, if you stretch you money about $20 you could have a Citica, which is in a whole different class. But they are capable reels, durable, economical, and will put a whoppin' on big sheaphead!

yeah... it sounded like that because like most reels... it probably came under or over lubed. ive had brand new $200 reels do that.

cast it... if it sounds like it needs to be lubed.... chances are it does.

i do not own a code nor do i have any experience with them at all.... but i do own 9 other quantum reels that perform great and smooth and two of those are probably 10 years old.

the other big name reels are great reels....but so are quantums. dont be fooled.

Adam,

Thanks that is something I will most definitely do!

I saw that lube at my friendly local Wal-Mart and I will pick some up And if you have 3 of them to back up the 200e7's that obviously means they perform well.

But I agree with you kikstand I have a Shakespeare bait caster that a friend gave me for my birthday a few years back and every few trips out I have to take it apart clean it and I don't think there is a reel made that does not have it's own little problems no matter what you pay but I wouldn't trade that reel for anything.

Two of the three worked fine for a long time before needing a little TLC, the third reel needed a good cleaning and re-lubing from day one. I used Penn Synthetic Lubes, the only aftermarket lube I have ever heard anyone say BAD things about was Quantum Hot Sauce,...after doing that one reel, I decided to do all three. Perfect! Good reels at that price point. Not quite a Citica, but then the Citica is at a higher price point. You most always get what you pay for. I have some higher priced Quantum PTs that compete against (price-wise) a Curado, but I REALLY like the Curados.

Adam,

Thanks again for the info.

I have recently got back into bass fishing just about 2 years ago and just now starting to get my mo-jo back and dont want to step in with both feet so to speak and buy all the expensive stuff yet ,  I am not a custom to these bait casters just yet but getting very close and I thought the Code looked like a step in the right direction but I guess I will find out this weekend I will post what I think about it on monday.

Speaking of reels and servicing them I was looking through the info that I received with it and found no info on the maintenance other than to send it to a Quantum repair facility.

How often should one be serviced?  I do mine every other trip out just to make sure it is not collecting dirt and to keep the lube clean is that to often?

I don't know about you guys but I take my own apart and service them and I took my Code apart last night and made sure it was lubed properly but does anyone actually send theirs in to service them?

i had a code as my first baitcaster and it was a good beginner reel but honestly i thinkg a pro qaulifier is a much better reel for the same price. nothing wrong with the code i just thought it was a good entry level reel for a beginner. once i stepped up the the energy i was suprised how  much better the energy casted. now i have all BPS carbonlite reels and will never go back to quantum. not that they are bad but i like the new CL reels so much better then any quantum reel i ever owned from the energy to the tour.

Kelly,

I really like what you are saying and I know Quantum stuff is good but not great and I am looking forward to stepping up but I think this is going to be a good reel for reintroducing my self back into the world of bass fishing and pitching and flipping not to mention finding those hot spots fast with the 7 to 1 it's go time!!

I got mine for $79 when I first started with a baitcaster, great reel for that price then.  Now there are so many different budget options like the PQ, Citica, and lower Abu reels.  I've seen the Codes at Walmart for $129, not a good price for them, I wouldn't pay that much for one.  I like my code and still use it but there are better and worse.

Big rick,

I got mine for 79 dollars at Gander Mountain. Then spent ten dollars for a one year warranty that covers anything It wouldn't matter if I ran over the thing I can take it back and get a new one but hopefully I wont need that.

I tested my code out this past weekend and made over 100 casts with it and found it to be amazing not one hint of trouble no matter how hard i casted it would not backlash, I had very little noise in the gears at the end of the day, It is a great reel for the price and would recommend it to anyone.

Good to hear it worked out great as I'm a Quantum fan myself and continued success.

CHICITYBASSER,

Thanks, I was really worried about it especially after the first reply I got and thought oh my but after this weekend I was exteremly happy with the results, Flipping and pitching and all around performance was just more than I could ask for.

What is the next step up from the code in quantum?

The next step up would be the new Accurist PT, then the Kinetic PT and then the Catalyst PT. I have the Accurist PT from a couple years ago, which did pretty good in reviews on TackleTour. I also have last years Energy PT which works very well for me but I know others on the board have complained about the weight of the reel. Both reels came off ebay at great prices (less than $75).

I just bought another Accurist PT for my son (I too have one) and it's a good reel. Same price as the Citica. Remember that all of the PT reels are a different animal than the other Quantums, and are better made and will last longer. I have one of last years Energy PTs that I bought on clearance at Dicks for about $50 off retail. It's big, and strong, and heavy, but it should be around for the duration.

I don't know that weight is really a factor for me I can say that I have used some heavy reels in my time and fished all day with them and did not used to bother me but I would be willing to swap a little weight for durability.

once I am on the water and concentrating on fishing not much else seems to matter at that point.

Are they really that heavy?
