Personally, I like Trilene XL and use it in 8, 10, and 12 # test . On my channel cat reel I use Trilene XT in 16# and on my flathead cat reel Trilene XT in 50#.

I like the Trilene XL as well.  Recently, I found the 300+ yard spools (330 yd. I think...) on sale in a local sporting goods store at 2 spools for $6.  Tough to beat that.  Needless to say, I have a pretty big stash of it now. 

I assume your PA water is not heavy with cover. So for  an all around set up I'd put on 10 or 12# Berkley XL.

Why not use the "soft" version, i.e. the ultrasoft..?

I have been using the ultrasoft for every application, in test's from 4 to 20 lb youzuri hybrid ultrasoft. I have also used different fluro's, and I find that the ultrasoft catches fish just as well, and has a much higher abrasion resistance, especially around rocks.
