I have been using my new Revo Stx for about 4 days now. It's paired with a St.Croix 7' MH Fast 3/8-1 oz. rod.  I am able to cast a 3/8 practice weight 33-35 yrds on a consistantly.  What kind of distance should i expect to get?

Accuracy is decent so far, but not where i want or need to be!

The line you use will greatly effect distance. Lighter, softer lines will generally cast farther. KVD Line and Lure applied to the line as directed will also make a difference.  At the lower end of the rated weight range of the rod, you are probably OK with those distances. As you get to know the reel better you'll likely get more distance and accuracy. Good luck.

Would i be better off with a rod that was rated 1/4 - 5/8 oz.  I normally fish worms, including Senkos.  But like to use jigs   and frogs now and then also.  I'm a newbie, so the weight ratings are confusing.

For those applications your 7' Med Heavy power, Fast action rod will work very well. It is a good multi-purpose rod. For light jigs and plastics a 7' Med Fast or Extra Fast (in the range indicated) will make a great addition IMO. That's how most of us justify the amount of tackle we own.

Distance is a bit over rated, I'd take accuracy for bass fishing.  Key factor for distance is how the rod loads up, identical ratings from 1 manufacturer to another will not always produce the same results.  I've had glass composite rods cast further than their graphite counterparts, also on observation seen incredible distance from ugly sticks.

That distance seems really good for only 3/8ths of an ounce.  Unless you're using the rod for cranking, though, distance isn't really as important as accuracy.  (Although, I guess if you're throwing a carolina rig distance is kind of important too.) 

If you can hit small targets(pockets in pads, edges of trees, etc), consistently, without a large splash, from 20 yards, that's about as good as you need to be in most situations, IMHO. 

Distance does come into play now and then, for those of us that are shore bound most of the time.

Hitting holes in between weeds ect. are more important. Just keep practicing ..
