1000 or 2500

Featured Replies

Possibly planning to purchase a new Shimano spinning reel soon and would like some advise. I'm not certain which series I'm getting but would like to nail down the size now. This is going to be pretty much a small river rig exclusively. I fish mainly grubs, worms, small cranks occasionally, jigs, you know, the normal wading fare. I'll be putting it on a medium action rod. What is the general recommendation?

2000-2500 is the "standard" size spinning reel for bass fishing ( besides costing the same as a 1000-1500 size ), a larger reel has larger drag discs, a larger spool ( which means more surface for the line to wrap around ) and a higher IPT.

Small reels having smaller spool have worse line management issues than larger reels, simply because the line is wrapped around over a larger surface, less line twist and larger line coils, it 's easier to maintain a tight line, the line has less tendency to jump off the spool, also, being the spool larger you can spool in heavier line in a much better amount than with a smaller reel.

2500 all the way!!

As long as you're not going UL, definitely get the 2500.

I went through this same thing a year ago.  I was late to the party on the MGFB clearance and only the 1000 size was available.  I use mostly Shimano reels, but for this application (M rod in river for grubs and tubes)  I went to a Daiwa reel so I could get a 2000 size.  If you want to stay with Shimano go 2500.

Generally: 2500

For light applications (white bass, crappie, stocker trout)

the 1000 is fine. I have a Stella 1000FA saddled on an

Avid AVS66MLF which is nice. All my other spinning reels

are 2500.
