Football Jig Rod

Featured Replies

Ok, I am new to football jig fishing, but I love it!!! I spent my first day trying these out this past Saturday and hooked (keyword there) some good fish, but didn't land them all. I was using a Quantum Superlite Heavy Action Rod and the Powell Swim Jig rod. I had two on that were 5+.....lost them both on the head shake and caught a 3 and 2. I had another one come off that was 2 - 3 lbs. I broke my Quantum Rod on the hookset on another large bass. It was a tough day of losing fish, but I chalked it up as a day of learning. So what did I learn?  I learned that I needed some good advice on fishing these football jigs.  Anyways, I think my problem was my hook set and the rods.

I need some some good advice on a solid football jig rod and how to properly set the hook. I just about only fish 3/4 oz jigs. I fish deep and in the current, so I want a jig that stays on the bottom.

Any advice???

Depends on your budget, but here ya go:

Rod: G. Loomis GLX MBR844C or BCR854

Reel: Curado 200E7

Line: Braid

Jig: 3/4 or 1 oz GMAN Mop jig

Trailer:  Rage Tail Lobster

Attractant: JJ's Magic or MegaStrike

(I believe the attractant holds the bite a little longer)

I HATE braid, but it has dramatically improved my

jig fishing. I am using a direct tie, no leader. When you

detect a bite, lower the tip of your rod as you reel down

quickly! Snap your wrist to raise the rod tip without

moving your hands relative to your body. This allows all the

energy to be transferred by the rod.
