Rods for occasional use or guests

Featured Replies

How much do you invest for rods you know won't be used regularly?

I'm thinking of picking up a 7' M/F rod that I could use for walleye fishing with my brother once or twice a year and other than that would be my loaner rod for friends and guests.

BPS Extreme rods are decent rods. They are not as light as more expensive rods, but they are a decent rod for the money. They are tough and reasonably sensitive.

i have way too many rods to take on each trip so i let guests use my rods.

Every winter, Walmart has a fishing tackle close out.  Over the years, I've acquired a number of decent borrower rods.   Some of my better finds have been: a couple of Team Diawa Flippin Sticks for $15 each.  Numerous Berkley Lightning spinning rods of various actions for between $10 and $20.  Several years ago, Mitchell had a "fulcrum" series of rods, the first split grip rods I'd ever seen.

Fast forward several years, and now I've got borrower rods for nearly any style of fishing imaginable and they are all better than the stuff I started fishing with in the 70's.

I find close out reels kind of the same way, but most of my closeout reels have came from Dick's or Bass Pro.  Especially Dick's.  You get an un-motivated 19 year old GED type and put a price gun in his hands and bargains happen.

Isn't an M power a little light for walleyes?   Maybe an MH would be a better choice.

Cabela's has all sorts of rods on sale...includign combos, if you're interested in that.

I like the Prodigy rods at $59, normally $99.

Good solid gear...

Other choice is the BPS Extreme, but they are not on sale now...usually around Feb/March.

Dick's sells the Field and Stream Series rods for $40 and they are really nice rods.

a Medium powered rod is plenty for walleye, bass fight way harder than a walleye and people use M for bass

I go through this every year. Here's my thread on this subject from a few weeks ago...

Nothing, there's enough stuff in the workshop that whoever fishes with me that needs gear is basically using the same stuff as I am.  Why offer a guest less than what I'm using.

I have a few St.Croix Triumphs i have for guests to use and for walleye/pike. Pair it up with a PQ and you have a relatively inexpensive loaner pole!

For that price, I'd pick up the Avid. If I could've found a deal like that around here, my BIL would be using an Avid this year instead of the Energy PT.

I used to let people use my gear but after watching how badly they abused it, I decided to keep a loaner rod around that I might use occasionally.

if you have rods with a similar warranty to loomis and st. croix (avid and up), $50 bucks will get you a brand new rod which is cheaper than most good quality rods.

i much rather break one of my GLX rods than a Rogue rod (that cost me half as much) because of the warranty.

I just set aside my older gear as I replace it with better equipment, and the older stuff is designated for guest use.
