Scraping Noise reel WITH VIDEOS

Featured Replies

Hey guys. When I reel in my new reel (used it the first time today) with a lure on it, it makes a scraping noise. I can describe it as the same noise a CD makes when in the CD player and it gets smooshed and grinds. I can't really feel it in the handle, but i can hear it. If i just sit there with the line in the line clip on the spool and reel it in it's as smooth as butter. So what i did was I tore it down (literally ever piece, even the bail wire!) cleaned it all up, regreased the entire reels contents, put it back together. I put a wiffle ball on the line and casted out. In the driveway it makes no noise, but if put in the grass under some tension it will make the noise, a bit fainter, but still make it. In the pool under constant pressure it makes it. Are they supposed to make noise when under pressure? It did it before with any weight on the line, now it only does it under pressure. Help!

Edit: Two Vids. First ones it without any load on the line, second is with load on the line. Click the images to go to the vid.

As the spool moves (oscillates) in & out while you are cranking the reel, the lip of the spool (if you crank slowly and watch the spool) will move toward the rotor. Watch carefully to this area and you will see the spool edge make contact with the rotor.

Some manufacturers will put in the reels box some extra shim's (sometime black sometimes red ones). Remove the spool and you will see them on the spool axle at the spool clicker.

If the MFG added some of the shims in your spools box add one, this is called adjusting the oscillation (in & out movement) of the spool.

You don't make mention of the reels manufacturer...

If the mfg didn't add any spares, or they didn't add any and there isn't any on the spool axle of your reel, I would return the reel to the retailer...

OOPS! It slipped my mind, i meant to put in the manufacturer. It's a Spidercast Tarantula 2200 spinning reel (i think was made by mitchell). My grandfather bought it as a combo at a local tackle shop, it didn't come in a box. I'll look and see if it's scraping, but i don't think so. I did a quick look, but maybe i'll have someone reel it in and i'll look. Like i said, it only does it under pressure. Thanks for your help, hope to hear some back from ya if you have any new ideas.

My reel does it on occasion. It doesn't affect performance so I don't really pay attention to it.

mine seems to do it anytime there's a heavier lure like a spinner bait or a fish on. Hmm.

listened to your vids, in the second one it didn't sound like scraping or rubbing it sounded like under-lubricated pinion bearings working under torque...Probably the result of wide/lose tolerances in manufacturing..

So you think that the bearings are poorly manufactured causing the noise? When i greased it up when i'd cast a lure that wasn't so heavy it wouldn't make a noise, where as before it would, or it would randomly stop for a few seconds. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. They're shielded (sealed) bearings all over the thing, theres no way to lube them up is there? What stumps me is its smooth as butter and the bearings were fine when i checked them. I never would have guessed them though, but i was going to lube them until i saw a shield!

If it is a lower cost reel that would probably been normal for it.

Even cheaper shakespeares have been quieter than this one lol.

If it helps any all of the grease was white except for the grease on the gear that runs along the spool shaft, that was black. Maybe graphite is rubbing off the body into the grease?

Due to it being a cheaper reel when they designed it they knew it would be cheaper, so all the parts have lower tolerances.

So i think that because of the tolerances being off slightly, there is of course wobble and some grinding. But in your case i would say its grinding due to wobble.

When you put tension on the line, it puts tension on the spool, and because of the low tolerances, its putting the spool SLIGHTLY crooked, so a small part of the spool is grinding on the spool shaft (sounds like metal spool shaft grinding on graphite spool) .. Theoretically causing the noise your hearing and that you provided in the videos.

I have heard that noise before on one of ms crappy Shakespeares (The one that comes on the ugly stick spinning combo ) and that seemed to be the problem. You can probably wiggle the spool a little bit.

To fix it, there was nothing i found that could fix it. I'd suggest buying a new reel if you can.

Hope my blabber didn't confuse you!

I follow. Where would I check to see where contact is made or how would i reproduce it in a way that I would be able to view it so maybe i can figure out a way. I'm pretty good at fixing things, i just need to observe them acting up.

I narrowed it down to the line roller. Sooooo, i guess i'll go ahead and try and fix that!

Good Luck!

I noticed that the part near the bail wire that the line roller itself sits on had two pieces of graphite that were protruding out that werent supposed to so i took a razor knife and cut them off then sanded smooth with some 600 grit sandpaper. Cleaned it and greased it back up and it's as good as new. thanks guys.

I had a cheaper reel that made a noise kind of like that. Sprayed some WD-40 on it and it stopped. When it started again, I just sprayed it again and it stopped. I would give this a try to see if it helps your reel like it did mine.
