Well... I finally gave in and got a baitcasting setup.   I got a 6'6" MH st croix mojo bass trigger rod, 7.0:1 johnny morris signature reel, and 20lb power pro line.  I'm going to be using it for worms, spinnerbaits, and most likely jigs.

Sounds good, you should get many years of service from it..

I agree you will love baitcasters, and of you are fishing worms n jigs unless thr water is really dingy or muddy I wouldnt use braid. Been there Done that

Thats why some crazy person invented fluorocarbon leaders.

But you need flurocarbon as strong as your braid or else what is the point in having braid, right? Ive never used one

No, you don't.  There are other benefits to braid other than the brute power.  Because of the no stretch, it is ridiculously sensitive.

I use nothing but braid to each his own......no leaders either.

Locked, you got yourself a nice set up. It should serve you well. I would have stayed away from braid as well, but for a different reason. Since this is your first baitcaster, you'll probably backlash it pretty good a few times. Mono would be a lot easier on your wallet when you have to cut it off and start over.

Nice set-up, but that 20# PowerPro might have some issues "digging in" on the spool because it's so thin...like equivalent to 4# mono.. You might find that 50# or so works better on a baitcast reel.

I don't necessarily agree with that.  I find that braid backlashes far less than mono.  If it does, it is far easier to pick out backlashes easier.  Mono is all but ruined after a single good backlash.  It kinks very easily and makes a weak spot in the line.

I do agree about the size you picked though.  20 is really small.  I've got 30 on one of my baitcasters, it digs in a little.  I wouldn't go less than 40 myself for anything else though.

i always thought braid backlashed much worse than mono untill i tried it. it is a LOT easier to pick than mono.

i would suggest someone new to BCs to start with 10-12lb mono until they get the mechanics of casting down then move onto braid.

i use 50/12 power pro with 10lb cxx leader.

I love this reel and rod. You guys are right about the 20lb braid digging in. The backlashes are not a problem though. I'll have a backlash about every 30 - 40 casts, and don't have a problem fixing it. Sometimes I'll have a backlash every 3rd or 4th cast when I'm sucking at life, but it is easy to fix. I was thinking about going to 12 or 14lb mono, because some of the places I've started fishing are too clear for braid. But I like the no stretch of braid.. so maybe fluorocarbon? I don't think the fluorocarbon will be a fan of my backlashes though.

Leader it.  Use an alberto knot.  Be happy.

  I agree w/ S.F.B.A. Harder to cause b.l. easier to get out.   As far as the size I found out 1st hand.  Put 30# PP on a couple of my BC's.  It's pretty thin and does "dig in".  Ended up putting that on a couple of my spinning reels and switching to 50.

I aslo find braid to be very easier to pick out and not be ruined like mono I also think 20 lb is a lilltle light for bc but I use it on my bc with very lil trouble minus the now and again dig ins but u should be very happy with ur new setup I have the mojo plastic trigger rod and rather enjoy it
