Best swimbaits under 1 oz.?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I'm looking for a 4-5 inch swimbait that is under 1 oz. as I do not want to have a rod specifically for swimbaits.  I'm also from the upper midwest and fish a lot of smallmouth waters that also have great largemouth and I have a couple questions as well.

Do swimbaits work as well in stained water, or is it mostly a clear water technique?

Do most of you throw your swimbaits on braid, mono or flourocarbon?

Thanks for your time guys.

Take care,

Steve

The Mattlures Baby Bass weighs 1.3 oz, but no special equipment is required. Your MH or H bass rod will handle casting this lure just fine even though it is rated just to 1 oz. I have thrown the lure on my G.Loomis MBR844C and a St. Croix EC70MHF without stressing the rods.

8-)

I'm not an expert on these baits at all, but I am an expert at buying stuff thanks to the bait monkey.

I live in TN, and I have bought a bunch of SB's in the 4-5 inch range.

Some of the best looking ones I've found:

1. Huddleston Shad (pricey!)

2. California Swimbabes' Tiny E and Little E

3. Basstrix Paddle Tail Tubes in 5 in (buy 5/0 keel weighted hooks like the Falcon or the new weighted Owner twist-lock).

4. Strike King's King Shad is a good looking hard swim bait.

That's waht I own so far, and I'm anxious to give them a shot this Spring.

From everything I've read, these baits are best in clear to slightly stained water, but what do I know? Like I said, I've never used them.

One other, relatively cheap option is the BPS XPS swimbait or the Storm baits. they are readily available at BPS and won't cost you much.

This may not be what you're looking for, but the best swimbait under 1oz just might be the GYCB SwimSenko.

No special equipment needed.

Cheers,

great idea for a thread!

i hope to see some more responses. i've been looking for a good swimbait for under an ounce too...seeing as my largest rod rating on any of my rods is 3/4oz.

Paddle Tail Swimbaits (Basstrix and the others)

Huddleston Shad

Mattlures Baby Bass (Like Rw said, it's 1.3oz but casts fine on a 1oz rated)

Yeah I would choose a soft plastic swimbait that is not rigged with a hook, like the bass magic or basstrix if you want to spend a little more money. That way, you can get a weighted hook and vary the weight to fit your liking  ;)

Huddlston just came out with a 6" swimbait coming in at 2oz, ROF in 5 and 12 (rate of fall-feet per 10 sec's) and in a half a dozen patterns. ABT waigtail soft series 6" and also 2oz. ROF 1 sec per foot.

Other optoins are Matt Lures, Poor boys-Silly Rabbit and Bunny and Osprey swimbaits all great!

Myself.......I can't wait for the new 6" Hudd's to get here !!!!!! ;)

Hey Steve, check these baits out. I've been sticking small mouth and largemouth on them for the last couple of years. Not too many folks throwing them, but they work. http://www.stormlures.com/products/luresdetail.cfm?modelName=wildeye_swim_shad234&freshorsalt=Fresh&type=soft_lures IM000747.jpg

the one on the left was 3-10,I caught it & 2 largemouth on the storm 4" swim shad pearl color.

Has anyone tried the California Tiny "E" Swimbabes?

Anyone have any insight as to whether or not the soft bodied swimbaits are better than hard bodied swimbaits?  For example, a Swimbabe or a Jackall Wake Jr.?

Thanks guys.

Steve

I'm doing a big test this Friday with alot of the popular paddletails and swimbaits.  Basstrix, money minnow, poor boys, Tiny "E", Reaction Strike, Powerbait Hollow belly and Realistix, Storm kickin slab and live sunfish (sunfish is already up), Bass Magic, Bakubaits, Castaic,  just to name a few.  Should have results up by Sunday.

Check out Poor Boy Soft plastics, Lucky Strike makes a swimbait and a company named Chark Bait also makes them. I 've been looking for something in a 4 in to 6 in range for Michigan bass, (Oakland County). My real problem is what hook is right The Owner weighted 5/0, the Mustad weighted 5/0 or the Gamakatsu weighted. Give me some in sight please.
