uses for Core 50

Recommended Posts

Just curious what Core 50 owners use them for. Line capacity is listed as 105yds/10lb and 85yds/12lb test. I was wondering if folks were mostly using them for lighter stuff or as an "all purpose" reel.

I use mine for worm/jig!  Cause that's what I throw most!  You do realize that 100 yrds is the length of a football field right?  Unless you have to cut a birds nest out, you don't need that much line for bass fishing!

It holds twice the amount of 12# invizx needed but it's very small diameter line.

You can always put a 20# braid and an 8ft 12# Mono or FC leader and it's an all around use.

I use them for smallies with 10lb braid & short leader for baitsfrom 1/4oz up to 1/2oz. I used one this June for a week of pike fishing casting baits up to and including 1oz with 20lb braid. Very versatile reel.

I bought mine to throw light stuff on my Loomis GLX BCR852. But it was just not happy doing that. Very fussy in that employ. People tell me it's better with mono for throwing light stuff, but I don't fish mono as I want my line to be invisible. One of my '10 Revo Premier's is now filling the light bait throwing role (and the other Premier is being used for med-heavy), and the core is on a BCR803 GLX now, throwing mid-weight lures, 3/8 to 5/8 mostly. It's fine for that, but overkill. Had I known it was not going to handle light lures, I'd have just got another Premier. Or another Curado.

The core is small, which is nice for folks with small hands. Since I don't have small hands, it's really not a plus for me personally. I do not regard the purchase as a good bang for my buck.

For the vast majority of presentations, it's beyond me why anyone would need more than 75 or so yds of line.

I've used them for anything from small top water ricos all the way up to a 1/2 oz jig, and everything in between. It is a small reel, but has plenty of power, at least in my experience.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't worried too much about line capacity. I agree most reel don't need that much line. A lot of the reviews of the reel had talked more about using it for lighter stuff so I was curious.

If you are that unhappy with it I might take it off your hands.

I don't have one yet, I'm thinkin' about it though. That's a lot of cash for a reel, but once the monkey latches on, he's hard to shake. If I get one and don't like it I'll send it to you for free, but the shipping will cost you about 370 bucks ;D

If I buy one, that's where I'll get it at. I found one (new) a while back for $300 shipped. I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a rod or reel.

I just got two of them, one last week and one this week, on ebay. After seeing that post about the Core not handling light lures well I had to put them to the test. Dropping $610 on two reels that were limited to larger baits didn't sit well with me.

This lure measures a whopping 1-3/4''x3/8" and weighs a little under 1/8. I tossed it this evening on my medium depth cranking rod with no difficulty. I could've probably changed out some brakes and made it even better.

Glad you're happy with them throwing smaller baits, at least so far. I didn't say it wouldn't do that, just that it is quite fussy doing it, especially with FC line, it seems. Any little change in wind direction or small changes in lure weight meant adjusting everything on the reel or risk backlashes. My Premier's are much less fussy that way, and throw the same lures at least as far, and usually farther.

The core is a decent reel and all. But it just not excel at throwing smaller baits compared to other reels, in my experience.
