My New, Old Daiwa TD-Z

Recommended Posts

I just got this in the mail today. A Daiwa TD-Z 103HL Type R+. They haven't made these reels since '04. These things really do cast quite well. I was casting and pitching in the backyard. Very impressive performance so far...

The clutch release and the handle being way back on the frame are quite unique, but very ergonomic for me, a righty who uses left-hand bait-casters. I also have come to really like the flat area over the line guide on many Daiwa reels. It's the perfect spot for my thumb.

I took it all apart, cleaned and re-lubed, added Carbontex drag washers just 'cuz. Spooled it up with some 40# Suffix braid, and casted it some more! I'm looking forward to getting on the water with this reel. Might have to get me a dedicated pitching rod 8-)

Sure is purdy lookin.  Would take me a while to get used to where the clutch release is on that.

I have trouble with Daiwas and Abus because of the way the thumb bars are positioned. I sometimes depress the button on hooksets because of the way I grip the reel. One reason I tend to prefer shimanos is because the majority of their thumb bars don't go the whole way across from crank side to non-crank side.

I've been very curious about TD-Zs because of their thumb bar design.

This is one the truly great "lefty reel for a righty" form factor.  Dan, you can find lefty TD-X class on the cheap, if look hard.  I bought a bunch for like $40 each, used.  New they were $200.  Great reels.

Very nice add there Russ.  I'd love one.

John, you use the TD-X for flipping and/or pitching correct? How are they at casting?

They cast as well as any reel in my arsenal. I use them for t-rigs and frogging as well. In fact, I spent about 24 hours of tournament fishing a frog exclusively, and my partner couldn't believe how far I was flinging a Scumfrog rat. At least 5 yards farther than him, and I could skip under docks. Left his Citica in the dust.

;D

I got to play with my new toy today, and I gotta say this is one fine reel! It sure is different than any other reel I've seen or used, but it performs!

Now if I can find another, I'll be all over it   :D

:DMan I am hoping to get my hands on one of these reels. I hear that they are awesome. I have left an ad in the classifieds looking for one of these guys in the right hand model. I have had no luck so far will someone please feel sorry for me and help me out. The new ones have to be off the graph expensive so I am looking for a well taken care of used one hopefully with the drag upgrade and bearings also but if not that is ok. I am also looking for a td-z103 or TD-Z103 type R. I will probably have about as much luck as the people looking for Elvis. 8-) I am hoping someone will come along and help a guy out :'( with a good deal. I Have a brand new pflueger partriarch xt and a brand new pflueger partriarch 7.1 lp. Both reels are new in box . You can email me if there is anyone out there who is willing to swap me or I will pay cash if the price is right. trentgreer@att.net .by the way what pound braid did you use on your reel when using the frog and it hold enough 65lb power pro or is that to heavy of line for this reel.

Keep the "wanted" and "for sale" ads in the classifieds. I also see you're posting comments and asking questions over in the classifieds. You're all messed up, Dude! :D
