Have bought 2 - help me pick 1 more rod

Featured Replies

I jumped on the St. Croix Premier 7' MH that was in the flea market, Got a Kistler Carbon Steel 7' Med. off Ebay for a great price, now I need one more 7' med. to finish out my intentions. I'm looking at a Quantum QEC705F Energy PT, a Browning Midas MI70MT, Fenwick HMXT70M-F Triggerstick, or another Kistler. The Kistler is a Magnesium MGAPSMH69 6'9". Of these four the Kistler would be the more expensive and a little above my budget but I think I could swing it. I've heard great things about the Midas rods, this is one of the later BPS models, and how they are close to a Johnny Morris Elite in sensitivity and strength.

Serious opinions on all four please.

I've heard good things about the Fenwicks, the quality is way above the price. You might also want to check out the Falcon Bucoo and Lamiglas Excel

The only one I could speak for is the magnesium, I had a 7'MH and 7'H.  Unless you are dead set on a 6'10" or can get a deal on one, I would look for something else.  They are good rods but there are better for $160.  I replaced mine with Dobyns Savvy rods of the same specs and like them much more than the Kistlers.  I felt the magnesiums were very close to the Powell Max rods but at a higher price.

I second the Lamiglas Excel rods.  Excellent rod that won't break the bank.  Check them out at ***.com.  Also take a look at the Powell Max.

I would pass on the Magnesium. They're decent rods, but I don't think they're worth the money when compared to other rods in that price range.

I have an Energy PT spinning rod (6'6" MF) and it's a surprisingly nice rod for the money. Light and sensitive, with a nice feel in the hand. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I had the need.

i have the Kislter you are considering, and I've put many miles on it so to speak. I think it's better suited for spinnerbaits, and other lures that require a bit slower action, so I fished it mostly for throwing spinnerbaits, and sometimes paddletails, or even big cranks. I've passed it on to my son at this point, but if you can get a deal on one, it's a decent stick. I too think the Powells at $140 are the better deal though.
