Backing

How much backing do you use on your reels? Do you fill 1/4 of your spool with backing or 1/3 or what? Do you use a different amount on spinning reels vs baitcasters?

Depends really. I use enough to get good bite but also make sure the reel is about a 1/4 from being full.

I cut and retie quite a bit so that leaves me with more main line typically.

I try for about 1/4 to 1/3 full on baitcasters. I don't put backing on my spinning reels but I don't go through as much line on them and the smaller pound test don't cost as much so I guess it doesn't bother me as much.

I only use a co-polymer backing for braid I'll fill the spool till I can't see the spool anymore which is about 1/8 to 1/4 of the spool. Braid is all I use as well as spinning gear.

I use spinning gear and use cheap or unwanted line as backing. I use enough backing such that there's room for 50-60 yards of the actual line I'm fishing with.

I never did it before this last time since I'm just now trying braid.  I filled my spool with backing until I thought it was about 1/3 full.  Didn't really know how much to put on so I tried to make sure that when the braid was going on that I'd have enough left over to fill it again later.  That was what I was aiming at.

I use backing with braid only if the filler spool doesn't fill the entire reel spool.  If I hook into a good musky I want to have confidence in all of the line on my reel.  If I do need to fill a reel spool out with backing I use braid from previous line changes.

I back all my reels with mono.

I back them to a level based on what I use the reel for.

So if its my pitching stick I back it pretty full so I only have about 30 yards of good line on it (25# Fluoro is expensive! I use less of it this way)

If I'm casting a frog or something, I wont back it nearly as full so I have tons of braid to cast.

I use just enough mono to barely cover the spool, then I fill the rest with braid. Spinning or casting, they're done the same way.
