Johnny Morris sig series spinning reel??

Featured Replies

I bought one last year on sale too. Nice reel and real smooth! I still had a few issues with the drag, but all in all a nice reel for the money! I have to say i just love the symtres i bought last year. There just like a pair of nice work boots, they get smoother and more comfortable every time i use them! :)

I've got 2 of them. They have been flawless after 2 years and I would recommend them especially at the sale/reel trade in price.  8-)

I just bought the JM40. I paired it with a 6'6 med action Bionic Blade. Havent used it yet. Going for a few min on my lunch break. My office buiding is on a pond/lake. I'll report back and let you know what I think. BTW, got them on sale. Reel was 80, and rod was 60. Normaly 100, and 80.

OK, so I'm back from lunch. Just tried out my new set up. Didn't catch anything.  Initial impressions are that the rod seems very sensitive, I think it will be ok. The reel on the other hand, I'm not quite sold on it yet. I'm using the braid spool w/ 12 lb dia. Spider Wire Stealth. I felt like I had to reel harder to retrieve the line. I felt like I was doing more of the work then the reel was. Kind of like when you line goes over top of the tip of your rod and it gets harder to reel. Now I don't usually fish braid so I'm not sure if this is normal and I'm just not used to it or not. After work, I'll try it w/ 8lb. mono. I'm also not sure if it is because the top eye on the rod is very small. I'm not sure that this makes a difference of not.  I'll try the reel w/ a different rod and see if that makes a difference. On the bright side it did seem to cast slightly further w/ less effort.

I've had three. They had that silly titanium deposition finish. Frame and neck looked like chrome, but not for long.

Mechanically, they were fine with one minor flaw, the instant non reverse were not instant. The bail could move slightly back before it locked. At times, it was a minor annoyance. No big deal.

The problem was that finish. It began deteriorating very quickly. In less than a season of fishing, the finish corroded and blistered. Looked like it had been underwater for a couple of years.

None of my other reels including some BPS Extreme baitcasters. The first they exchanged without a question. At the beginning of last year I gave them away, and replaced them with Shimano Saros reels.

All my gear is stored inside out of the weather. Looks like the latest JM reels do not have that deposition finish. Had it not been for the finish problems I'd still have them today.

Yeah Rhino that Titanium Deposition finish isn't good. Trying to get that stuff to stick to the frame isn't an easy task. I was surprised when they came out with it. I clean and repair reels and have seen a lot of the JM's with the finish peeling off.

I purchased one last summer, mounted it on a Tsunami 8' inshore rod.  Using 20# braid I had wind knots constantly and I didn't like the drag.  Catching 10# fish in the surf can be a formidable task and this reel did not make the grade.  Returned the reel to BPS, and the sales associate wasn't too high on the reel either ( most of the BPS guys are saltwater fisherman here) upgraded to a Diawa Tierra 3000 better drag and have yet to have a wind knot using the same line.

Playing with a reel in a store is not an indication performance, personal trial and error is the only method to know what's right for YOU.

I have looked at this reel, really like the carbon black look the reel has, but everyone I talked to at BPS basically said stay away from that reel and look an another reel from another manufacture.  At least it looks cool.lol
