Hooks in depth

Featured Replies

I saw an article about the chigger craw and that it was rigged with a 5/0 hook. I was suprised by that and it made me wonder what sizes you guys use for which lures. example: 1/0 octopus = dropshot, 5/0 g-lock = craws, etc. etc.

I'm not asking for advice on how to buy hooks. I'm looking for what you use. ;)

Worms - Straight Shank

Lizards - EWG

Creature - EWG

Tubes - Various

Straight shanks help stop line twists.

Keep it simple. Don't get all hung up in hooks.

Find the ones you like and stick with them.

I try to carry as little as possible and usually leave myself with a few packs of 1/0 and 4/0 wide gapped gammi hooks.

I fish 90% of my soft plastics on 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks. Some smaller tubes are fished on 3/0 EWG Offset Worm Hookss and I fish a few baits on a 5/0 EWG Offset Round Bend.

With live bait I use 2/0 Octopus Circle Hooks for striper (gizzard shad, yellowtail and skipjack). #6 Octopus Circle Hooks for smallmouth (big shiners).

3/0, 4/0, 5/0 Owner offset shank worm hooks.  The thicker wire and the cutting point make a difference.

4/0 Gamakatsu G-Lock Offset EWG for everything that will fit on it!  ;D

I use anywhere from 2/0-4/0 extra wide gaps for most of my plastics. I also use straight shanks with worms though.

I can't say just one size for worms, because the length and girth dictate my hook choice.  I like a straight shank for t-rigged worms (not in grass), but I may opt for an EWG if I am fishing a thick bait like a GYCB 8" grub.  I pretty much follow what KVD preaches in his book.  T-rigged worms get straight shanks...C-rigged baits get offset round bends...tubes, creatures and other thick baits get EWG's.  The order I placed the hook choice in ranges from the best hookup ratio (straight shank) to the least (EWG).  I know a lot of guys just use the EWG for everything, but the straight shank and offset round bend have better hook angles (although they can't be used for every bait/situation).  Still...I find myself using the EWG for most applications, because I fish a lot of grass and thick baits.  I have a good hookup ratio, but nothing beats the straight shank for that sure-thing; roof-of-the-mouth puncture!
