Pond Fishing around Austin, TX

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

New to this site, it looks great so far.

Anyway, I'm also pretty new to bass fishing.  I used to do a lot of crappie fishing as a kid with my grandpa, but no real bass experience to speak of.  And all the bass fishing that I did was on muddy, murky, weedy ponds and bayous that had a visibility of about six inches in the water.  Now I'm in Austin, and have had no luck at all fishing around here.  All the lakes have very clear water and seemingly no structure.

So I'm trying to find some small ponds in the area where it will be a little easier to find the fish, so that I can practice jigging texas rigged worms and such.  I'm not really interested in the size of the fish there, mainly just the quantity.  I think one reason that I haven't caught anything on the bigger lakes is that I've never fished with worms or soft plastics and can't feel the strikes.

Sorry for the long post.  If you know of anything let me know!

Try some Texas rigged Culprit 7.5 punkinseed worms, 1/8-1/4oz black bulltet.

Also, Parmer Lane tackle used to carry Nichols products, try the smoked red glitter tubes.

Down size your line to to at least 10lb.

When that don't work, the standard chrome and blue Bill Lewis Rattle trap will take fish all summer.

Good luck and Hookem Horns!

Not to good with ponds in Austin area.    Decker Lake,  ie....Walter E. Long has some bank fishing with lots of grass, or did have grass few years back.

Great shore fishing on the newly renamed Townlake, Lake LadyBird down town Austin.  Heres a little secret, Lake Austin, just below Travis has produced it share of SAL's and double digits bass in the grass' as well.

Heres the little secret, LadyBird doesn't allow motorized boats on that stretch of the river, thus not much pressure ever, and its the next leg of the Colorado river just below Lake Austin.    Some very big bass in that stretch, just like Lake Austin, just untapped.

There are miles of joggin paths on both sides of the lake down town.    Great spot to walk the banks with good fishing.

Welcome aboard!

Ladybird has some really fine sightseeing :) Jogging trails.....

There are also some places to rent canoes and yaks on Ladybird.

Edit:

Like Matt said, Ladybird is a No Gas Motor lake. But you can use electric.
