How long do you stay with a bait before trying something else.

Featured Replies

Do you guys have a time limit for how long you stay with a bait that is not producing before you switch to something else? Do you anchor in one spot and try several things or just keep moving and trying different things in the tackle box?

If your fishing a new lake or a new area of a lake, what do you do to try to get some action going in regards to trying different baits, colors etc. to get a bite.   I have a bad habit of just sticking with something too long with no results.

well it really depends    if i can see that it will be a slow bite i will stick with a bait a pretty long time  but if i get to a spot that looks really good i will switch baits just to make sure that i cant catch one on the spot  but if i know the bass are biting and im not getting bit i switch quickly   depends on my confidence in a bait  like if im trying a certain bait for the first time i might not keep it on as long as i should

That's a tough one to give an excact answer. I always give a lure several cast. Maybe not on the same stop but I don't put it down after just a few cast. And it would depend on what lure I was trying. I always will try more than one lure and different presentations with one lure on a spot.

I don't worry about tweeking color as much as profile and presentation.

I think the only true answer is the answer varies from angler to angler.  You almost just have to trust your gut.

I keep swiching and keep moving until the bass talk to me.

If that doesn't work I slow down and saturate an area with some finesse

I won't usually throw one bait more than 15 min if its not working, but I may go back to it later

Depends if I am feeling the "vibe" or not ;D ;D .... no seriously

I switch up my baits a lot. If I am ouf for a long outing il bring with me 2-3 rods rigged with different baits and throw one bait then another at same spot. Then move to another spot and try same thing.

Most of the time I will just take one rod with a bait  tied on and try it and if I do not get hit on that bait in 30 minutes il try another bait. maybe il go back to the origional bait later if conditions change to favor that type of bait.

Also if I am doing something like fishing a bed and the bass are being realy stubborn I might try like 3 different colors/styles of soft plastics until one triggers the bedding bass. I may change the style of plastic ever 5 minutes.

Bottom line is dont keep chucking a bait for hours at a time if it is not produceing. If you have been tryin a bait a long time(30 mins+)...and nothing has hit that bait. Then tie a different type of bait on

Depends if I am feeling the "vibe" or not ;D ;D .... no seriously

O, i couldnt agree more. I think most good bass anglers just have an "instinct". It all boils down to how much confidence you have in lure. And, sometimes i go fishing for the day just to learn a new lure/technique. That is one instant where i would just stick with one lure.

Ditto

Situations - such as how much time you have etc

depends.

spring, summer, fall...usually start top and work my way down...reverse in winter.

pop-r type bait will tell you right quick if their active or slow...crankbait, spinnerbait on a point will tell you right quick if their gonna chase.

this leaves plastics......sooner or later, it always comes down to plastics.

and, it usually doesn't take very long.

I agree CJ this is a tough one, I think it's has more to do with timing and location than it does with baits. I've seen it go every conceivable way from not getting a bite for hours then loading the boat and then I've seen times where I had to change baits after I caught 1 bass. This is why I fish with a partner most of the time; we start out with either different baits or the same bait in different colors speeds the process up.

This is one where you have to trust your gut and roll with it  ;)
