Went out for the first time in about a month.  Went to Hillsdale Lake last Saturday evening and it was not good.  There for about 4 hours and buddy and I only landed 3 baby bass.  However, hooked a HUGE walleye by accident.  Didn't have my net with me as I cleaned out the boat the night before and forgot to put it back in the boat!!! I fought it for about 5-7 minutes and was able to get it close to the boat.  My buddy could not fit his hands around the walleye, not even close.  Tried some towels and a pair of pliers, nothing worked.  Walleye then went limp for a second, and at that exact time my line went slack and the hook came out.  My buddy just about dived in to get it, but it swam away.  I never fish for walleye, but I can tell you it was probably d**n near 30 inches long when it came up to the side of my boat. My buddy who has fished walleye for his whole life said it was probably a good 7+lb!! He agreed it was probably 25-30 inches because the d**n fish was longer then my buddy's shoulder to fingertips when he first bent down to strip and grab it.  We were fishing in a little cove pretty much straight across from the main boat ramp.  I was using a chatterbait and was only about 3 feet of water back in the flooded cove. Net was put in the boat as soon as I got home that night!! 

 

Going to Lake Texoma this weekend for a Guided Striper Bass outing, so that should be fun.  Anyone else go to Texoma for LM or SM fishing??

That stinks about the big walleye. Grab them under the gill plate next time or you can often tail grab them because their scales are so rough and tails are so big. Or, you know, use a net ? If it was 30 inches it would have been pushing double digits though. They'll run around 7 pounds at 26-27 inches.

 

Never been to Texoma but always wanted to go. Supposed to be a blast for the stripers and it has big largemouth and smallmouth. Huge blue cats too if you're into that sort of thing.

 

If any of you guys are available and want to help out a great cause, me and a couple others have organized a benefit tournament to help out the sons of a friend and fellow angler that drowned this past summer. We have about half the boats we were hoping for, needing 4-6 more. It's only $50 a team, and we have some good prizes to give away. It's a combo bass and walleye/saugeye tournament (Steve was a tournament walleye guy so it's in his memory/honor we're doing the combo deal). Send me a PM if you're interested.

had a surprisingly productive day on leavenworth state fishing lake today.

caught around 3 dozen bass in the 1 to 1.5 pound range.

Plus these two. Not   trophies, but fairly decent for this lake.

most fish were caught on an ol monster worm, fished along outside weed edges.

I was out there a couple days ago and caught about 10 dinks throwing a chatterbait over the weeds.

I caught a few dinks up shallow.

when I backed off to the outside weed edges in 10 to 15 foot of water the average fish was bigger.

Fished Wyandotte county lake this morning. caught a total of 31 bass. 7 of them were over 15 inches. the top 5 weighed 12.4 lbs. Caught a few on a swimjig, One on a berkley drift walker. Nicely done!! 

Just got back from Texoma doing some Striper fishing for the first time.  That was an absolute blast!! Man, those stripers can put up one hell of a fight.  Best was catching them on using top water lures.  Those stripers would hit those top waters so hard that it felt as if they could rip the poles out of your hands. We caught 23 to keep, but actually caught around 35-40 but threw those back as we were wanting the larger  Wind was horrible down there and my little 18ft Nitro couldn't handle the rip rap spots where the smallies hang out, so we didn't go after those.  We did find some coves that shielded the wind so we caught a fair amount of largies, and a coup le were probably in the 3-4.5lb range.

bass are so keyed on the shad it is hard to get a bite on lures.

I caught 8 bass in the 1 to 2.5 pound range and this 5 pound 10 ounce toad.

Man you have been slaying them recently! Color me jealous!

@pauldconyers Late summer/early fall is my favorite time of year. fishing pressure has gone down and the bass are starting to feed more frequently.

Tournament out there on Saturday was won with barely over 10 lbs with 5 fish. Only 3 teams brought in 5 fish. Not sure what the big one was.

There were not many boats on the water today. I have noticed La Cygne can get tough, if there is a lot of boat activity.

With 5 fish only weighing 10 pounds, they must have used the state 15 inch length limit.

5  18 inch bass at La Cygne will weigh over 15 pounds.

this was the only bass over 18 inches, that I got in the boat.

I lost one other in the 4 pound range. It picked up my fluke and swam right at the boat. Never got a good hookset.

Yep, was a "Bass Pass" required tournament

I believe Monday was the first time I've ever caught a keeper (15") of all 3 species of bass in Kansas in the same day.

Took a reconnaissance trip to Perry today.

It  was my first trip there for 2019.

the lake is still 15 foot high, but some of the boat ramps are now open.

The lake sure looks different when it is that high.

Smallmouth were hitting spinnerbaits off of rocky points first thing in the morning.

caught 5 all this size. then the bite shut down.

 

could not find any quality largemouth, but small fish were biting everywhere.

Must have been a good spawn this year.

Perry is loaded with 3 to 12 inch Bass. It could get interesting in 2 or 3 years.

crappie fishermen were complaining because bass this size would not leave their jigs alone.

Melvern is a lot the same. I bet I caught 20-30 sub 10" largemouth Monday. I was really getting frustrated with them for awhile to be honest, but they could offer some great secondary options to the smallmouth in the coming years, especially if they're resistant to the LMBV that infected the lake. Just as long as they don't take over.

 

Made a few cast at Gardner this morning, glad I did. 4.16 that hit my frog with everything she had, wasn't sure it wasn't going to be a catfish as hard as she hit.

I was hoping to extend the early morning smallmouth bite with a shakyhead or Ned rig. That didn't happen. Whenever the bait hit the water a little bass grabbed it.

I finally had the chance to get away and do some fishing yesterday and went to Lake Shawnee. Buzz frogs in the weeds on the south end worked pretty well for largemouth, most of which were around 2 lbs. I also caught a few including 1 smallmouth in the cove with the covered dock on a spinnerbait. I think next week I’m going to try a new lake though. I’ve been driving by pony creek a lot for work lately and it looks like it might be worth the trip and it would be good to go somewhere other than Shawnee for once.

Pony is decent for bass but it has some monster wipers if you feel like chasing those. Shawnee State Lake has big fish in it too.

I’m not sure why but I always forget about Shawnee state lake. I’ll have to give it a shot sometime soon too
