mrkpaint
A buddy and I just returned from Lake Huites having fished 3-12-08 through 3-19-08. When we arrived we were advised that fishing was "slow" and the spawn was just ending. The lake was being pulled down. The 1st morning was indeed slow, by Huites standards, but it bagan to pick-up that afternoon after we adjusted. Topwater bite was good (not excellent) the 1st hour of the day. White flukes with some yellow paint on the tail worked real well after that, with small crankbaits in chrome and white following that. These were all "pound the bank" patterns where you would expect to find fish. As the day heated up we worked deeper water off long points, humps, etc. Deep crankbaits, t-rigged plastic and swimbaits were effective here for mostly nice fish. Topwater again in the evening. Best fish were a 10.2 and an 8 (both on flukes) with a mix of nice "keepers" and small fish. There were plenty of 2 to 3.5 lb fish to provide a good fight and dozens of 5 lb bass were caught. My wife and I fished the same lake the last week of January (prespawn) and found spinnerbaits to be the best bait all day. We stayed at Lake Huites Lodge both times, as we have used them a lot in the past, but we may try Trophy Bass Lodge next year. They are both located near the intersection of the 2 rivers. Brett Graham
I was there as well during that time frame, you may have seen me and my son fishing. Your description of the fishing is right on. We had some writers, including Mark Davis of Big Water Adventures with us, and Mark pretty much fished deep water points exclusively with big swimbaits and crankbaits. But he has fished the lake MANY times over the years and really understands that deep water fishing. As for my son and I, it was his first trip so we pretty much stayed with the shallow water fishing for numbers. We ended up with several in the 7 pound range, but we had our chance at several bigger fish but it was just not meant to be. My lodge manager tells me things are starting to pick back up. The postspawn should be turning a little, and all of those bass we saw on the points suspended should be setting back up on the points and humps and ready for a big ol' swimbait to come by! mrkpaint
Brett, We enjoyed talking to you at the Hermisillo airport and may be contacting you for next years trip. After many years at the same place we are feeling a little taken for granted. We got left at the airport this year because Texas forgot to tell Mexico we were coming. We surprised the local staff when we showed up at the top of the mountain at midnight rattling the gate. But it was all good when we got on the lake;)
