Is the Zoom Horny Toad a good jig trailer?

Featured Replies

I bought one bag of the Toad's a few weeks ago with a C-rig in mind but then I started reading about jigs being a very popular year around bait. They seem too big and heavy to put on a jig.

I laughed when I typed "horny jig" in the search box, it came up dead anyway.

Horny Toads are topwater baits. Try rigging them texas style with the special made horny toad hook or a Tru-Tungsten Greg Hackney's Hack Attack Frog Hook. Both are really good.

Horny Toads are awesome.  I catch a lot of fish on them.  I've rigged them several ways, some work better than others.   Here's a few of my techniques...

1)  5/0 Gamakatsu EWG - very weedless, hook-ups are reasonably good

2) Horny Toad Hook - about the same as the Gamakatsu with respect to being weedless and hookups

3) Matzuo 5/0 Long Shank worm hook - reasonably weedless, but hookups are much easier since the hook point does not come up thru the body, but rather up behind the bait between the legs and the point is set just under the skin

4) Eagle Claw weedless - reasonably weedless, but easy hook ups.  Best for buzzing in more open water.  The hook point down acts as a keel and keeps it right-side-up.  Hooking it point-up and the bait rolls over in open water.

Topwater?

I have a lot to learn...thanks XL

Thats what we are all here for  ;)

I think it's a bit too bulky to use for a jig trailer.

Most people use them by throwing them on top of grass or pads, bringing the lure back like a buzzbait and then letting the bait drop into holes.

I've actually caught some of my largest bass by throwing them at the edge of grass lines and just letting it sink and bringing it back to the boat with a slow retrieve.

Never thought of using one as a trailer but it might work for those times when you want to slow down the drop of the jig.  Kinda bulky but you could trim off some of the toad body.  Those kicky little legs might give your jig a new look.   ;)

Horny toads are the worst. I much prefer Manns or cane toads

The worst? IMO they are one of the better soft plastic frog baits on the market. You really need to give that bait a second try before saying it is the worst.

maybe for a soft plastic frog but for true topwater frogs a harder plastic frog spro bronzeeye style is the best with the higher end/better model would be a deps frog plus the deps has a different action thats cool

Horny toads are primarily topwater, but i like to fish them in heavy cover and let them fall when I get 'em over a hole in the slop. Those legs wiggle great on the fall and will trigger strikes.

Just for the heck of it,i'm gonna chop the head and most of the body off of one and try as a jig trailer.

I'll let you know how i do once i can fish here again/

I thought I read on here or in Bassmaster magazine that some people save them after they get chewed up and use them as a trailer. They just cut off the top and use it liek a regular trailer. Maybe a way to save some money.

Okay, they are not the worst, not even close to the worst. I just worded that badly. I just think their are brands out their that will outperform the horny toad. Give mann's a shot, they are very good

the horny toad and buzz frog are topwater baits. if you want a trailer, use a chunk or a double tail grub. thats what i use for trailers and they do just fine

As already stated, Horny Toads are a great topwater bait. I like to use them over weeds that are right at the top of the water, or as a alternative to a frog/rat.

I picked up some Zoom Chunks before I went to Gibbons Creek yesterday and they worked fine to me.

I tried a Toad this morning for a few casts and did get one hit, I wasn't ready so he spit it out before I set the hook. I think they will work great when the vegetation starts to take over in the next month or two.

I have (1) scum frog and I can only cast it about 20' with my baitcaster. I caught quite a few last summer with it but then switched to a PopR almost 100%.

The Toad is a lot easier to cast and in my opinion, I believe the bass will hold it longer than the plastic frog.
