FISHING THE OHIO RIVER

Featured Replies

I need some info on the Ohio river near Carrollton, KY.  I do not know the pools I will be in, but I will be close to Carrollton.

I am looking for areas that are close to the town that will produce a good limit of bass in May.  Will be there from May 11th to the 17th.

What do they bite on at that time frame.  We are talking about 6am - 2pm.

Are there any maps available somewhere...I can not find anything good right now.

GPS positions will work for me....you can PM those to me.

Gee, you're not asking for much are you?

If i lived on the banks of the ohio i wouldn't fish it.

NOPE....lol 8-)

Squid, I fish there often. The only map you will likely find is a navigation book sold by the Corps of Engineers. Haven't bought one in years but if still available try contacting the Cincinnati office. It won't show the layout of the creeks, but it shows where they meet the river. You might try calling Dixie Marine in Fairfield, OH to see if they still sell the map someone made of the Markland pool [next pool upstream from Carrolton] As far as where to fish my money is on locking up to Markland Pool and concentrating on the creeks. Lose time locking but many more fish up there. Water in these creeks is very stained but the fish are used to it. Throw Buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, shallow cranks, and flip your dirty water favorites as tight to cover as possible in areas where you see shad activity. Bass in Ohio river creeks will many times be positioned in water so shallow you would swear his back should have been dry. 6" of water is more than deep enough

Well, my advice to you is google earth man!  Find some small tributaries and go up them.  See if you can find any that open up into pits or whatnot.  Good luck, that is some tough water.  I know people catch a lot of fish there, but....

If its anything like the tournaments I fish there, I would say just a limit is a lot to ask. Like fishhawk said very very shallow, or find fish on the main river deep. If you can find a rockpile, there is fish there
