talking to dc/ md state gov to ban keeping of largmouth, smallmouth, and striped bass

Featured Replies

can anyone help me do this.  some people in the potomac river area love to keep bass and ussually i force them to throw the fish back but it gets to be a lot to do when you are only fishing for four hours and a half (5:30-10:00).  can anyone help me with talking to the states to preserve the great fishery of the potomac.   feel free to discuss  if you would like to do this for your state and i will try to help.

Are they keeping more than the creel limit?  Do they keep the small ones, big ones, or every one?

i see this alot where i fish on the potomac. Not racist at all but most of the time is is hispanic people keeping any fish that they catch weather it be a 10 inch bass or what. And this is a secluded area where seeing a park ranger is a surprise can anthing be done about this. Im with you potomac bass maybe not a all out ban but deff stiffen up the laws

How do you force them to throw the fish back ?

Isn't part of maintaining a happy fishery culling some of the fish?  I think the population numbers are high enough where this shouldn't be an issue.  A lot of people fish to eat.  Not my thing but whos to say they can't do it?

There are some areas of the potomac which is catch and release only already. For the most part I believe culling some fish out is a good thing. However the problem is some, and no not just one ethnic group, keep everything they catch whether legal or not. Better enforcement needs to be done, but the question then is how to enforce it better...

Personally would like to see the banning of PWC's on the upper potomac, from Great Falls and up. The river is just not wide enough farther up, the PWC's have no respect for others trying to enjoy the river. Not just other boaters, but wading fisherman and those swimming/walking in the water.

Good luck in your quest but I don't see it happening.  You are better off to notify the game wardens of the location where the offenses are taking place and let them handle it.

There are miles and miles of unpreserved shoreline on the upper potomac where people can walk through woods to get to any secluded spot, catch as many as they want and bring them home.  Game wardens are becoming more strict on both rivers and lakes (that I've noticed this year).  My dad have seen them a lot more and even got asked to go through the checklist once at a local lake.

You need to tell whoever the park rangers/office workers are at the launch that youw ould like to speak to the local game warden or be given a phone number where you can report the info.  Take note of the stringer if you get a chance.  If the fish are within limits there is nothing that can be done (hence why these are put into place).  You have a long journey ahead of you, those don't change unless populations deem neccessary per the river/area biologists, etc.

My dad and I always report people if we know they have fish outside of the limit.  Catch and release unless your within the guidelines and or fishing for trout/panfish/etc.

usually the people keep all the fish they catch and have no license displayed which is needed in dc.  I force them to throw the fish back by saying what they are doing is stupid and tell them it is illegal even if it sometimes isn't.
