Not alot of hits but when they happen...wow!!

Featured Replies

Hey all...

Weather here in Rhode Island has been steadily getting colder, so the boat doesn't get launched that much. Doing alot of shore fishing which I enjoy as well. I have not been getting alot of hits, but boy, when I do, they are the bigger fish in the local pond. I have upsized my baits, going to a large hollow bellied swimbait, and a 3/8- 1/2 oz. jig with a large chunk trailer; tomorrow, a few different larger spinnerbaits.

Anyone else in the Northeast having any success this fall season?

I hope to get out a few more times before it snaows with the Procraft, but who knows!!??

I've been fishing at work without a sniff for two weeks now. They were hitting jigs/Jerkbaits but now nothing.. Not sure what is going on.

I have been having a great fall. Catching them on Jigs, crankbaits and yesterday jerkbaits.

You are lucky Matt. It has been pretty slow for me. I have a few days where I catch 3 or 4 but not enough. Are you hitting big lakes or small ponds? I find the big shallow water to be better as it takes longer to coll and heats up faster. Me and Masssilverrt are going to Wordens this weekend. It a big shallow lake with tons of big bass as well as Pike.

I have been fishing ponds 200 acres and up this fall. Had my best luck in the shallow areas about 2-8 ft. Weedlines and shap dropoffs have been good at times also. Havent had much of a deep bite this fall.

Had a great day at Mashee-Wakeby a few weeks ago and another one at Long Pond in Plymouth.

Keep chuckiin them jigs Alan! ;) Other then top water and swimbaits, the jig bite is one of my favorite "THUMPS" to get!

I've never caught a fish on a jig. Guess I never really gave it a true shot. Any pointers on jiggin? I've seenit done on tv but thats usally in heavy cover and their pitchin. Just don't think you can pitch rite sitting in a john boat? What do you jig masters think?

I have been working on my "jigging" for several months now. I can see how people become addicited to it, and how it produces big bass. Work VERY SLOW at first. Try a 1/4 oz. jig with a nice size trailer. The funny thing about jigs is I thought they were just for flipping and pitchin too, but they are very versatile. Read the articles posted here for more great info and ask other members as I did...they will always help.

I realized that to be a well rounded bass fisherman, these was a technique that I HAD to learn....and now I love to fish with it and continue to practice the many ways it can be used.

Good luck!!!

If you live in New England and never fished a jig, your missing out on some of the best fishing you'll ever do. Pick a day to go out on the water and bring only jigs, no other lures. Force yourself to throw them from start to finish. Flipping and pitching are my personal favorites. Though there are other times where swiming it, can be extremely productive as well. I'm still catching fish in 4" of h2o,some 4#'s and up. You'd be amazed at how shallow bass can be. Even if you think "There's no way a bass can be there", they are! Try to focus on rocks and wood, i.e..laydowns,brush piles tight to shore as well as of shore structure. At first just to build confidence start w/ wood & rock along the shoreline and then once you confident try some of the deeper off shore structure. My personal favorites are Revenge and Picasso jigs. In general, the size and color combo's I chose to throw in clear water are 1/4-3/8 oz,Black w/Green pumpkin or Brown twin tail trailer, Watermellon w/rootbear green fleck, and Green pumpkin w/ green pumpkin trailer. I used to experiment w/alot of different trailers, but now only use the Zoom twin tail fat albert or BPS Triple Ripple twin tail trailer. When I think the bass are looking for a bigger profile I'll switch to a Zoom chunk. In Stained water I'll sometimes use Black w/blue or ultra blue trailers, in addition to Green Pumpkin jigs w/ a touch of Chartreuse. Some other personal preferences are; I trim the skirt just to the bottom of the bend in the hook w. a pair of scissors, as well as trimming the weed gaurd , so it only extends a few millimeters above the hooks point. There is no real need to get fancy, just stick to the basics and you'll start sticking bass as well as never wanting to put the jig down. ;) I'd be happy to take you out for a day of jig fishing only to help build your confidence, though a blind fold will be manditory ;D

Alan, so far I've been burning through the gasoline trying to find these guys! I'm actually going out to where I caught my PB Largemouth today. Haven't been freshwater since September. I need the California Duster to clean my gear.  8-)

So I went out today with a freind of mine . Caught on bluegill he caugt two lm 2.2 and 1 and a small pickrel. I really started out with the mind set to give the jig a honest shot today. Well it lasted about an hour and I gave up I just have no confidence I guess.

Water temp was about 55 on the surface. Dose that seem warm to you guys?

Im always up to learn a thing or two bassectomy! Maybe I should have fished with a blindfold on today couldn"t do any worse. Really could use a diffrent technic and perspective on fishing, been fishing with the same partner for ever. Let me know if you want to hit cooks I need to buy a new outfit for that place.
