What's wrong with Ohio?

Featured Replies

I have been fishing in Ohio for the past three years and I have found it to be pretty good as far as fishing in small ponds and creeks, but the lake fishing is not very good. When I go out on a big lake I catch a few, but nothing substantial. The biggest fish has been a little over four pounds. I have been to various lakes in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida and the bass are always bigger there. I have heard that a big bass in Ohio is around 7 pounds and I heard that there aren't a lot of them. Can anyone confirm this from experience? and Can anyone tell me what I could try to catch the big ones?

Well , common sense would tell you that the farther south you go , you will catch more bigger fish.

You're best chance to catch a hog in Ohio is to keep fishing the small ponds.

The 15 years that I hve been fishing for bass in Ohio have produced one 7 lb'er and it was caught in a strip mine pit in S.E. Ohio.

State record largemouth bass.

13.13 lbs.

25 1/16 "

Caught in a farm pond on 5-26-76.

Man, I didn't know anything about that stuff cause I don't keep up with the news. Thankfully those things didn't happen around me.

Yeah that has no affect on the big bass. 2-3 pound bass are no problem catching, but the bigger ones are. I have tried using bigger baits, fishing deeper water, and basically every thing possible, but to no avail. I'm starting to think that there just aren't a lot of them.

I sadly agree, lake fishing isnt the best here. But you gotta take what you got.  I've always had success on a red, or pumpkin seed worm or tubes. But, the biggest lake bass ive caught has been 6 lbs.  which in my honest opinion is a brute

The biggest thing with Ohio is the weather I feel.  It changes so often it is hard to put a pattern together.  When I have been able to fish a pattern I have caught bigger fish.  Another thing is to stay away from high pressured lakes if possible.

My go to lure is a six inch pumpkin seed worm. The fish seem to love them here
