The Thick Stuff

Featured Replies

Depends on the type of vegetation, if we are talking thick matted grass then I will go in with my 7' Heavy action flippin stick, 50lb braid, and texas rigged sweet beaver or ZOOM speed craw and flip and pitch.

For submerged grass beds then I will go with a heavy 3/4oz jig to get down through weeds, a senko for a slower fall, and a 1/2oz rat-l-trap to burn across the top of the grass. A suspending jerkbait like an LC Pointer 100 twitched right over top of the grass has also been a very effective technique for me during the colder months.

Jigs, and soon to be punching with 1 1/2oz weights and a beaver.

Jig-N-Craw & Texas Rigged Plastic    :)

If flipping thick matts, that will have to be a Zoom Grass craw or speed craw with 1oz and 50lb braid too. A jig and craw if the weed is thiner.

As for submerged weed beds, I love to throw spinnerbaits and vibration.

But I think you only want to know for thick stuff.... so yop flipping !

Sometimes I'll go with a hollow-body frog..... but I suck at frog fishing. Well, it helps me locate the fish on the missed strikes  ;D

Depends on the type of weed.

Scum Frogs, sweet beavers, senko

Well also in the thick weed situations, I'll rig a Yum Wooly Hawgtail, weedless/weightless and slowly twitch it along the top of the muck and it'll work just as well as a hollow frog, sometimes even better. The other advantage to this, is when you get to a pocket in the muck you can let the bait slowly fall into that hole, can't do that with a hollow frog, now can ya? :). By the way for me at least the wooly hawgtail is the only bait I've found so far, that comes over the top of the muck weedless, I tryed the Gycb Kreatures, and a few others, and they all collected some weeds when doing this technique. Oh yeah, I like the 4inch hawgtail for this, particuarly in greenpumpkin, and watermelon red I'd like too, but can't find that color  :-/.

Even though I use the technique stated above, I will still throw a hollow frog 75% of the time in the muck.
