Would any richmonders happen to know of a place to launch a yak for some decent sized smallmouth in the Upper James?

It depends on how far up the James you want to go.  IMO the best smallmouth fishing is to be had from where the Maury intersects the James to about Scottsville.  There are MANY places to launch a yak from in this area.

maidens landing on rt 522 or west view are great places to launch a yak for smallies. I use to all the time! could even take a day and pull a float from landing to landing now thats fun and catch all you want!

Where Rt 60 crosses the James. Can't think of the name but it's the the only spot where the James and Rt 60 intersect.

Yes bent creek is also nice area...since you comin fron in town you could also hit Watkins landind off rt 711. Its a lil deeper on this section of river but has been known to produce some citation smallies. If you go up from watkins and go to 1st set of rapids thats usually nice place to hang'em.
