Kayak NOVA trip

Featured Replies

Alright, I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, but I ahould have a kayak by the end of today.

Due to work and having 100 kids I won't be able to get it wet until Saturday. Was wondering if there were any other NOVA kayakers that wanted to go out on an entry level kayak trip.  I've been thinking about going to Abel Lake here in Stafford, but am open to other suggestions.

Congrats on the future purchase Josh! What kind is it? Theres a Manta Ray 12 with the works I've been eying for a few weeks now

I just picked up a swifty 9.5 off craigslist.

I'm cised to finally be able to get off the shore.

Hoki- I'm going to be going as much as possible. but like I said, I work 9-5 and have 100 kids so I can't just get oit and go. But I'm sure we'll hook up sometime. Maybe some james river cat fishing. Or striper fishing. Hell yea.

Thai- get it! I'm gonna be going out a lot on this thing.

If I might throw out a suggestion, go to Quantico and go out on Lunga or come on up to Roaches Run for your first trip, unless you've fished from one before.  It's much easier on still water to get your legs, especially this time of year where a dip can be fatal.

Thanks man. I haven't set my mind on going, other than the fact that I have an absolute hatred towards Abel and wanted to get over it. But I've never fished any of those bodies of water. I didn't get a fishing kayak, so I don't know how much I will be standing. If any. Thanks for the advice, though. I will look into those spots.

Let me back up before I get into trouble ;)...By "get your legs" I meant "get used to fishing out of a kayak. "  Standing in one is a whole other animal.

haha, thats what I thought you meant at first, and then thought of that crazyass J Francho and him standing on his. I thought it was the norm.

Nope, that's a little crazy.  I used to stand in mine (Hokifisherman has it now), but that's an advanced technique. :D

i dont have a fishing one either, but they work just as good, and you can use them for other stuff too which is very nice.  greg, the yak is the best thing ever.  i still have yet to stand, the water a bit cold to take a dip :)

Standing in kayak is easy, if you have the right model.

They are more than meets the eye.  :D

When I hear standing on kayaks I think about the Wilderness system ride 135, and the OK prowlers. They're suppose to be some of the most stable due to their width. I occasionally stand on mine especially when fishing frogs in some nasty stuff, but it not nearly as stable as a Ride. Some guys with better balance than me claim they can dance on a Ride and not tip :P I have no such balance, lol

I stand on mine all the time, haven't taken a spill yet (knock on wood).

If we go somewhere around me, i might be down.

Where is around you? I don't have a great carrying system yet, so I don't want to go too far.

I just slap mine in the bed of my truck and tie it down with some tow straps and it works like a charm.

Go to REI or LL Bean or whoever sells canoes/kayaks near you and get the $20 kayak/canoe car kit.  Best $20 you'll ever spend as it relates to he yak. I've used the same one for four different boats over several years.  Basically it's two ratchet straps and four foam blocks.

Nice. Thanks man.

Hoki- I've got a Mazda 6. Ha I'll look into the $20 rig.
