Jig retrieve speed

Featured Replies

I was wondering about yalls preference in speed during the early spring and about your presentation all together. Generally when I fish a jig I use it much like a shaky head rig. I cast it out there and let it settle and wait a few moments, then gently 'popping' the jig to make it shake and move towards me slightly. I vary in speed however.

I was wondering at what speed do you guys think is effective in catching bass in the early spring? (Obviously a slow one, but how slow? and what is too slow?)

Suggestions?

Only the bass know for sure   ;)

I do a lift and fall technique with my rod

so maybe 2' hops or drags

the only time I shake is when there is cover I want to exploit more

Maybe 1-2 seconds per lift so its not that slow

If its a tough bite  I do more soft plastic techniques

depends on alot of factors   usally i go with a really fast retrieve or a painfully slow retrieve    fast retrieve for when the bass are aggressive and really feeding on minnows    slow retrieve when they are more sluggish and demand a more natural technigue mimicing a craw

It all depends on what the bass want as HesterIsGod said.

Every day is different, so see what works best for you on that day. But then again I'm up in RI and conditions can change hourly. :-/
