Clear Lake California

Featured Replies

hey guys im going on a fishing vacation at clear lake.  Has anyone fished this lake before?? I will be shore fishing but i walk miles for fish.  My question is what is the best color for clear lake or lures even im planning on getting some lures today at the local fishermens warehouse.  I like using jerkbaits mostly but any suggestions is fine thanks please let me know if you guys know this lake.

I'm no clear lake expert whatsover, nor do I fish there, but I can say that bank fishing isn't easy from what I have heard and seen. A majority of the shorline is private property. 90% of the remaing "Public" shoreline is not fishable. Good luck bank fishing :)

I would suggest renting a boat for the day, or getting a tube.

As far as baits, the frog bite seems to be happening up there right now. I don't think you could go wrong with topwater baits ;) .  Throwing any baits with exposed trebles up there might be a nightmare... especially from shore.  That lake can become extremely weedy and I heard this year it's worse.  When are you going up there?

You are gonna have a really tough time finding good water to bank fish from.

State Park  has some , but not much.

A lot of the fish are still up shallow on beds or guarding fry.

I haven't been to Clear Lake in about 13 years, so I'll leave most helpful information to others. What I will say is that CL has been the best local fishing I've done in northern CA. The bass and cats are well above average for this area. Lately I have been researching the local guides so I can tell the Mrs. what a great anniversary present a full day guided trip would make. Depending on your budget, you may want to look into that. The ones I have been looking at provide everything! Boat, rods, tackle, and most importantly, local knowledge. They also offer shorter outings if full day trips are too expensive.

Have fun, and good luck. Remember to post pictures of your catch! I miss seeing those Clear Lake monsters.

i actually rented a house herre with some of my buddies and man o man our backyard is a great fishing spot, but it seems like the fish are spooked from people fishing here before or prior me getting here.. i did land 3 nice bass in the 18 range 3-4 pounders so i guess its not that bad.. 2 off a zara spook regular and 1 with a shallow crank bait about 1ft diver only... its very weedy here but i think we're getting a boat today or tomorrow i have 3 more days here so hopefully the bite is better later..
