Denver, CO Fishing

Featured Replies

I have a business trip to Colorado the week of March 8th. I was just wondering if there are any good fishing opportunities while I was there (either lake fishing from shore or fly fishing for trout in streams). I have never been to Denver and would be very appreciative of any information you maybe able to provide me. Thanks in advance.

Forget the bass. There are some, but you should go fly fishing or pike fishing.

I would go fly fish the Big Thompson.

Hit the Dream Stream or hit Antero, Eleven Mile, or Spinney Mountain for big trout or pike.  Big wooly buggers or crawdad flies in any of the three, or possibly some swimming damselflies around the weeds.  There's way too many options...

Ditto above, however, there is some decent bass fishing in many of the 100s of small public reservoirs (and many more private) that cover the front range. Early March is when bass fishing starts to pick up. Spawn starts around ~May 1st. Fish run to 4-5lbs with a few 7+ here and there.

Because of the mountains (and snowpack) there is a ton of trout fishing -every little crick has trout.

Quincy Reservoir just opened in Denver, prime spot for Bass and Smallies...lots of deep creek channels in there.  i think its $5 or $7 a day.

One thing i recommend while you are in town as soon as you leave the airport, stop by Basspro on I70 & Quebec Ave.  and buy a 7 day fishing license otherwise you can't fish anywhere in Colorado...its just not worth the risk of a huge fine...

Colorado has very good trout fishing and excellent pike fishing, though the bass fishing is fair if you know where to go. This time of year, with the colder weather (and with most lakes now unsafe to ice fish), I would go with trout. Fish the South Platte River below Spinney Mountain or 11 - mile with either flies or spinners or crankbaits.

if you want to bass fish...check out the dnr site. each resevoir has different stocked fish. and each one has its own specific rules. very strict and enforced outdoor laws and rules. they take their stuff very seriously out there ie...big fines, comfiscated equipment and so on. extremely awesome experience though. i wish i still lived there!!!

The fines for most fishing violations are less than $100 and confiscation is only done generally for serious offenses. I support such regulations though if people are stealing fish. In fact Colorado is pretty lax on protecting fish and the penalties are usually small.

I am new to Denver and would like to catch some trout!  Without a fly rod, is this possible?  What kind of lures do I need, some type of spoon/shiner??  Any good spots close to Denver?

Sorry for all the questions, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You don't need to fly fish to catch trout. In fact, fly fishing is often less effective than lure fishing or bait fish. Where it's legal, I would drift a nightcrawler piece on 6 pound test along the bottom of streams. Panther Martins in size 6 are great as well, as are countdown rapalas in rainbow trout, brown trout, or brighter colors if the water is murky.

Fly fishing works best sometimes, though bait fishing will almost always outfish it. Much of the time, lures do outproduce flies.

The South Platte is one of the better trout rivers around, though you need to go upstream of denver to get into the best fishing. Parts of it are flies and lures only, but in other parts you can drift crawlers. Some other good rivers are the Cache La Poudre upstream of Fort Collins, and if you can make the drive, the Blue River below Dillon Dam holds huge trout. Spinners and Rapalas will catch them.

You should have started a new thread of your own and explained your self a little better instead of using a thread that is 8 months old.
